U.S. taxpayers have spent $24 billion on Netanyahu's horrific war in Gaza. Instead of starving children, that money could pay for:

700,000 public housing units
500,000 low-income kids receiving health care
500,000 veterans receiving VA care
600,000 kids in Head Start

Combined.

Posting this to remind everyone to make some noise about this shadow docket case. Also, follow @safa-science.bsky.social if you aren't already.
The Supreme Court is reviewing a vitally important NIH case on its shadow docket.

It is likely that the Court will back Trump, and say his (illegal) grant terminations are ok.

We must speak up now.

The Supreme Court is poised to allow Trump to illegally terminate NIH grants. Let's speak out. There is not much time.

Working people across the nation are pissed off about this rigged economy, and they’re showing up. Wichita’s Congressman refuses to host a Townhall, so we pulled up instead.

Trump’s immigrant threat has played out like Bush’s WMD threat. Media played up the fear. Now he can’t find them (violent gang members) and is deporting children with cancer instead. People are slowly realizing they were lied to.
You cannot overstate how badly the media botched it re public opinion on immigration. People turned off their brains and forgot what was long obvious: Opinion on this is thermostatic. Trump isn't a magical exception.

We need a better discourse on this:

Republicans are racing to pass perhaps the most expensive bill in history, adding TRILLIONS to the debt, by trashing Senate rules.

Don’t EVER tell me we can’t afford to invest child care after we set trillions on fire to give tax breaks to billionaires who don’t need them.

Let’s be very clear: even if you are not a Medicaid recipient, cuts to the program will impact you.

Without Medicaid funds, rural hospitals, maternity wards, and nursing homes will be shuttered.

Having private health insurance won’t do you much good when there’s nowhere to go.

The private sector will not fill the gaps. The size of the cuts is too big, and the incentives does not align to do basic research or train the next generation of PhD students.

People have actually studied whether international students cross subsidize domestic students. And they do! If 20% of your student body is paying full price, and many of domestic students are not, there is a cross-subsidy, one that allows the university to hire more faculty and open more spots.

Unbelievable!
Today, San Diego witnessed a government-sanctioned kidnapping. ICE stormed Buona Forchetta in military gear ripping workers away, then unleashing tear gas and smoke on the terrified community. Full on police state, fascism now used on American citizens. Stay aware.

The American people did not vote to destroy US science and disease cure research.

If this were a parliamentary system, we’d be having snap elections now and Trump would be defeated. In the US system the only legal option for removal is impeachment.

And again, the public doesn’t understand this, because no one is out in public explaining it:
Here is UW - Madison's budget. Our <largest> funder is the federal government. 25%. It used to be the state. Either way, the university in its current form ceases to exist if these federal cuts really happen. But The. Public. Doesn't. Know. This. And our leaders are absent from the public debate.

We were learning how new technologies could improve mobility for communities. We were gaining insights on what transportation investments work best where. We were asking research questions that hadn't been asked before.

Wild to see it all reduced to "woke research."
US DOT just cancelled $54 million in university research:
—UC Davis: $12m
—NYC City College: $9m
—USC: $9m
—NYU: $6m
—San Jose State: $6m
—U. of NOLA: $6m
—Johns Hopkins: $6m

All had committed the woke sins of studying how to make transportation less polluting and/or less inequitable.

"As recently as a decade ago, a majority of Republicans said they had “a great deal or quite a lot of confidence” in higher education." And that trust has collapsed. Very true. Now, either the behavior of faculty changed dramatically about a decade ago, or something changed in American politics. 🤔
