Petition started by students in Modern Languages at the University of Leicester. The department has been told it will close despite its stellar NSS record and brilliant teaching and research - the same devastating short-term thinking as elsewhere. What's lost when we lose staff, departments, programmes and faculties in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and what's that got to do with organ donation?

Amid the looming losses faced by Cardiff, Edinburgh, Lancaster, Leicester and Nottingham (among many others), here's a worked example. 1/8

I've finally got around to curating a selection of films about the #climate crisis 🎥

There's lot of mediocre climate films out there, but for me these stand out head & shoulders above the rest 🎞️

They make excellent resources for classrooms, lecture halls, or community cinema's 🎬

Almost 100% of children in 73 neighbourhoods in England are living in income-deprived families.

Labour could choose to lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty immediately by scrapping the two-child benefit cap.

Child poverty is a political choice.

Less prominent in the Chemistry reporting (to my knowledge) has been the enormous growth of voluntary severance schemes in UK Universities. Some of them are mentioned in this @qmucu.bsky.social list. 4/ qmucu.org/qmul-transfo...

A new report shows the US’s super-rich are burning through carbon emissions at 4,000 times the speed of the world’s poorest 10%.

Some would have you believe climate action has to cost you money. They're lying.

Tax the polluters. Tax the super-rich.

Just in case anyone is listening, please note that UK universities cannot operate successfully on the basis of continuous reduction of academic staff and academic staff pay. No amount of staff wellness sessions will change this.

Outlines a conceptual framework for ‘emotion’ comprised of responses, attachments, and communities built from evidence from places across England and Scotland.

Resharing @lanre-bakare.bsky.social's article from Feb!

This is disappointing but not unexpected. Post 24 adult education is continually sidelined.
Adult learning deserves better: a Pre-24 not Post-16 Education White Paper.

In a 38,910 word document, adults are mentioned just 0.13%.

Maybe British universities should be treated like failing rail franchises, getting gradually nationalised as they go bust one by one, then run cooperatively, democratically, comprehensively, strategically and collectively for the public good.
