Theology & Religion at Nottingham has been and continues to be a leading department whose work is essential. The region and the university cannot afford to lose it.
The University of Nottingham's latest round of financial restructuring involves suspending our Theology & Religion BA course with a view to its permanent closure. Please support our staff and students by signing this petition c.org/MQVjrMwXq8

I think we should bring back vibe spelling. Just add extra letters wherever, as you feel ‘em. Things can be frantick or hectick if you need that superfluous ’k’ edge. Resist the tyranny of received orthography!

Not enough attention is being paid to the effective closure of the bulk of one of the 2 or 3 most important public archives for modern British history. A terrible own goal for the BBC as a public-service agency.

Good literary translation requires understanding (language, culture, genre--on both sides of the translation) and an ability to write well. "AI" can't do that. There are no shortcuts. Treat your work and foreign language readers with the respect they deserve. You won't fool anyone with this.

Nottingham has one of the most vibrant and forward-looking departments of modern languages around. Music too. To cut them like this, leaving no chance for future rebuilding, is educational vandalism.

Such a key point about cutting back on language provision - it’s not good for science and it’s not good for growth

Strongly feel that adults learning a new language should be treated like babies doing the same thing. Look, I'm going through a developmental leap this week, so I'm just going to be more cranky, hungrier, cry a lot at night etc.

In a world where universities are demonstrating that they do not value or want the Arts & Humanities, I can't help but feel that we do ourselves a disservice when we bow down to pressure to use genAI. What we do cannot be done by a computer.

Also available on Kindle immediately.
This book means more to me than any other book I have written. I want to get copies into the hands of everyone who cares about opera or is interested in the broader cultural history of our country.

Please consider buying a copy. Thank you. 🙏
