In 1654-55 a visitation was conducted at the Grand Beguinage of Mechelen. Dozens of Beguines were interviewed. The biggest complaint: too many (boarding and day school) children at the Beguinage! They made noise and filled up the church so that some Beguines couldn't attend services.

In 1694, the Dowager Marquise of Deynse, Marie-Alberte de Gand, founded a lace-making school at the Grand Beguinage of Mechelen. She outlined that the teacher of the school should choose "the most capable and virtuous girls" for admission.
