David Aaronovitch: This Bob Vylan furore is a distraction from finding an end to the bloodshed

The musician’s comments at Glastonbury were somewhat inevitable – but blaming the BBC is daft.

While the U.S. and China jostle, too many politicians and commentators have naively concluded the answer to trade more with the biggest mercantilist that only wants to export more to them. Dumb. Talk of cosying up to China is a dangerous fantasy

Talk of cosying up to China is a dangerous fantasy
China’s export orders hit their lowest level since 2022. A closer trade relationship is a perilous illusion

No question that politicians and markets (now just fear) were not braced for China's escalatory response. But this doesn't mean, despite awful optics now, that there wont be a deal at some point. Interesting q is who, by then, will hold the stronger cards 1/4

The most unpatriotic members of any society are the far right. They will always align with foreign interests against the interests of their own nations. They will always undermine national institutions and national values in pursuit of their own interests. When they pose as patriots, they lie.

With higher gilt yields fuelling talk of the need for tighter fiscal policy, here's one I wrote earlier on how fiscal conservatism is in theory compatible with radical economic policy elsewhere: stumblingandmumbling.typepad.com/stumbling_an...
Fiscal conservatism, economic radicalism
Sir Keir Starmer has ruled out significant rises in public spending under a Labour government. He's partly right. What his supporters and many critics fail to appreciate, however, is that a tight fisc...

Not quite sure how to reconcile 'thoughtful and moral' with his endorsements of Orban and Trump. The more thought he put into those interjections, the more one is forced to draw conclusions about his morals.
Here Turner describes Tim Montgomerie as "thoughtful and moral" - and then goes on to quote him saying he joined Reform to fight the "Islamification of Britain".

Times columnists absolutely fine with racism as long as it's the right sort of racism.

Suddenly Reform is starting to look plausible

Georgia has been rocked by protests after its increasingly autocratic government said it would halt the former Soviet country’s bid to join the European Union.

I dunno man, I feel like some of the obscenely wealthy people encouraged to move fast, ignore regulations and break things and told they are geniuses who owe nothing to society because their success is entirely their own achievement... might have found their way to right wing politics on their own.

Catastrophic mistake from Scholz to appear to bring Putin in from the cold, he’s emboldened not ready to compromise. Western leaders should remember this is who we are dealing with.
Overnight Russia launched a massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine, targeting energy infrastructure. Most were shot down but some still made it through. Two people were killed in Mykolaiv, southern Ukraine, by a drone attack. Six others were injured, including two children.
