This is rather special. Marc Bloch was a titan of modern historiography, and a big influence on me as a young history student. He was a brilliant French medievalist murdered by the Gestapo for both his Jewishness and his contribution to French resistance, but they couldn’t kill his work

Job offer!!
I’m helping a PBS series look for a social media manager/content creator for an upcoming promotional campaign. The start date is ASAP, and a project timeline that currently goes to July.

This is for a series on American Muslim history, so candidates with cultural familiarity preferred!

Proofs! I’ve been working on this material for years. I’m thrilled that it’s seeing the light of day in Journal of Contemporary History. It asks what ordinary Germans made of the democratization imposed on them by the Allies, analyzing the paradox that democratization is fundamentally undemocratic.

Memory controversy incoming: Arno Klarsfeld (son of Nazi hunters Serge and Beate) speaks favorably about "roundups" of undocumented people, risking administrative sanctions. A "rafle" (roundup) can also signify roundups of Jews in France during the Holocaust.

1) maybe a little contrarian but I'm partial to Timothy Dalton - I'd have loved to see what he could have done with a few more movies. And very much anticipated Daniel Craig's spin on the character.
2) decaf coffee
3) vegetarian chili

That brings us to tonight's #HATM questions:
1) Who is your favorite Bond?
2) What is your secret agent cocktail of choice?
3) And what is on the menu at your home tonight?

The show kicks off in just a few moments. See you soon!

Tho’ glory’s name may screen us;
In wars at home I’ll spend my blood—
Life-giving wars of Venus.

I’m better pleas’d to make one more,
Than be the death of twenty.

A remarkably large portion of American elites, even among the supposedly progressive and moderate ones, actually seems to not-so-secretly entertain fantasies of Imperial Grandeur.

"My team of specialized historians had failed to decipher a difficult text, but an AI tool was willing to confidently pretend to know what an indecipherable word meant" What a breakthrough!
So, I read through the transcription part of the Lash paper again. Again, I am okay with using AI to assist with difficult handwriting samples.

That said. I’m really not convinced that it says “Yankees” after Irish. It looks like Irish Indian to me with missing comma. I’ll chew on that.
