Trump withdrew the US from the JCPOA in 2018 and reimposed sanctions. Iran withdrew its commitments and is currently enriching uranium at 60%.

It's also expensive. Very, very expensive. 🧵

"The cost to build the reprocessing plant, including new safety measures, has ballooned to ¥3.1T ($20.57B), compared to the initial estimate of ¥760B. 💸

"Including expenditures for future decommissioning, the total budget has reached ¥14.7T." 💸💸

"Elimination rates are limited even in fast reactors designed and optimized for the transmutation of Pu and minor actinides. Consequently, multiple recycling of these elements is necessary, requiring reactor operation well beyond a century for effectively reducing their initial stocks." (2018)

🧵
'National Research Council, 1996: The rate at which actinides can be fissioned is so slow that it could take hundreds or even thousands of years of continuous reprocessing and recycling to make a meaningful reduction in the total amount of waste.'
