Turns out that it's not a good idea for a rich guy with lots of government contracts to own a crusading newspaper when an authoritarian controls the executive branch. Amazon has billions in deals with the Pentagon & wants in on the space biz. Bezos needs to suck up to Trump--or risk all that. So...

Speaking to WaPo employees, editor Matt Murray says cuts are about “positioning ourselves to become more essential to people's lives, and what is becoming a more crowded, competitive and complicated media landscape, and after some years when, candidly, the Post has had struggles to do that."

It's racism, pure and simple. And it seems to work. Look at the guy in the White House. He's gotten elected twice as a racist. So they have no fear of any stains.
In a sane world, the decision by Rufo, Vance, & co. to slander and slap a target on the traumatized, hardworking immigrants who revitalized a rust belt city -- and who *were invited* to that city -- would be a stain on their careers that they never live down.

They should be reminded of it. Often.

Please don't fall for this.
After Trump tells NBC News he could maybe use a "softer touch" on immigration, we immediately get the "different tone" narrative from CNN.

Brianna Keilar: "A change of tone for the president. Softer touch."

David Chalian: "He acknowledged learning something that this requires a softer touch."

I got into this business because of The Washington Post. I was inspired by its Watergate coverage. It’s saddening & maddening to see what’s happening there. Bezos is ruining one of the great—though far from perfect—journalistic institutions. This wasn’t inevitable. It’s the choice of an oligarch.
