I think it’s underappreciated in psychology that we establish generalizability of an effect not through some near-perfect ‘representative’ sample — but to the extent it consistently occurs across many different unrepresentative samples that vary demographically/culturally/etc.
"Representative sample" is a flawed, ambiguous concept and it does not have a precise definition in the technical literature of survey sampling, so you should avoid using it at all costs.

We're a month further into the job market - how are things looking? The good news is that the market does seem to have been delayed: ~150 new listings have appeared since my last post. The bad news is that the total is still substantially lower than what it was during the covid dip.

The intense racial and gender segregation of science funding will be even more pronounced going forward. This was always the intent.
"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3
