If red state schools accept this we are going to get a two-tiered system of higher ed. One set of states will be based in empirical reality and the other will be subject to the whims of a conspiratorial movement that is increasingly detached from facts.

Everybody who fell for the Harper's Letter or all the hand-wringing about "uncivil" students on the left, congratulations. You built this. You own this. And fuck you for being the useful idiots these fascists needed to launder their dismantling of academic freedom.
Faculty in red states are being punished for failing to signal in their course descriptions that their classes will include content on "gender ideology."

Remind me again which party was appalled by idea of "trigger warnings"?

This point cannot be over-emphasized enough. When I left the FBI in June, I said that if the destruction stopped that day, it would take a decade to repair. Talking now to friends still there, I think I was being too optimistic. We are witnessing the self-immolation of a great country.
Common theme of people I've interviewed recently. At universities, in research centers, in diplomacy, in the legal system, dealing with refugees or immigrants:

The reality inside is much worse than you would think from the outside.

One of my favorite things right now is when my 10-yo tells me something he learned at school, I act like I’m not really familiar, and then he teaches it to me. He just gave me a great lesson on prime vs composite numbers. At some point he’s going to wonder how I can possibly be a science professor.

I’ll be blunt: no respectable media outlet should be providing a platform for Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo.

He is nothing but a factory for anti-science propaganda. He has nothing of worth to convey to the public.

This should be a bigger story. A government official had the YouTube channel of a private citizen shut down bc he didn’t like what that citizen was saying. This administration’s version of free speech is a joke.
"He noted that snippets of Prasad’s comments still appeared on anti-vaccine social media accounts, suggesting Prasad was directing his removal demand only at a critic and not anti-vaccine influencers. In the past, Prasad has complained about censorship by social media companies."

What if scientists hadn’t waited until this point to speak about politics

Every time I see a headline like this, my brain just shouts

Like what if scientists hadn’t sat around silently watching everyone around them get attacked

Maybe the fight on campus would have gone differently
"Tao is one of the most prominent mathematicians and academics to publicly oppose the administration’s actions, calling them an “existential threat” to his field, and academic science, more broadly. He said public advocacy is a priority over his research, for now."

The 'Mozart of Math' rarely speaks about politics. The wide-ranging cuts to science funding made him change that.

NIH staff are literally being asked to screen candidates' social media for negative sentiment aimed at the administration.

This is *not* government efficiency.
Picking new members takes time: NIH staff spend 1-2 years screening candidates, getting approval, doing background/ ethics checks.

Some staff are now screening candidates’ social media to see if they've said anything negative about the Trump administration or have been involved with DEI efforts.
