The only way for self-driving cars to never have accidents is to . . . not have self-driving cars. Having self-driving cars distracts from the only viable solution for traffic for a major city: more transit, bikes and ped facilities, and fewer cars.

This applies no less to AI-driven cars than to human-driven cars.

FWIW, I'm not the least bit upset or surprised that they aren't fixing it tonight. Our power line is on the rear property line and next to impossible to access.

Am I hallucinating!? Just chatted with a few guys in town from Louisville helping with the repairs. They are doing assessment tonight and will be fixing tomorrow! We will just make it into day 11 as a powerless family.

New roll call request. Who else is still w/out power?
February 3, 2026 at 4:51 PM
Day 10 begins.

Does not feel like it when you're sitting in the cold and dark for the 9th straight day.
February 3, 2026 at 3:26 AM
I'm beginning to think my wife and I are going to have the pleasure of being the last people in our group of friends/acquaintances to get their power restored.

"How to watch" is an interesting topic if you live in areas that are, and have been since Jan. 25, w/out power! It'll be good news for me if I'm able to watch. It'll mean I have heat, hot water, etc. after more than a week. Here in Nashville, 34,000 homes - and ~ a dozen schools - still w/out power.

Day 8 w/out power.
February 1, 2026 at 4:27 PM
Same here. All streets around us have power. That likely means we are a small segment that won't be a high priority to fix.

There's a line in the song about being "powerless" if you're wondering.

Updates? @careyrogers.bsky.social ? @lisamilligan.bsky.social @seanforfive.com - Here on 23rd Ave South we are still powerless. OK, it's a generally overprivileged area, so we're not powerless, but we ain't got no 'lectricity.

Love your old school stove. We used one of those car camping when I was a kid. My "new" one ~25 yrs old) uses the small propane tanks.

Last storm/power outage photo for now. Our new bedroom.
January 30, 2026 at 3:15 AM
I'm thinking about using a headlamp all the time now - even after (if?) our power comes back on. Easier than turning room lights on and off.

Tortilla soup being made on Coleman stove by flashlight.

Roll call: Who is still without power? I'll go first - we are. 110 hours and counting. Note that I'm not complaining about NES or anything else. It is what it is. We're warm with the wood stove and able to shower at the downtown YMCA. Good meals most evenings cooked on the camp stove.
January 30, 2026 at 1:08 AM
Farewell news and information. I have no internet connection at home (or power, of course) so 4-5 hour journeys into downtown for shower at the YMCA and work at the office are only times I'm connected to the outside world. Not all that terrible really. We have a wood stove to keep one room warm.

If you are snowed in, now's a good time to watch this documentary. I've only seen the first couple episodes, but the parallels with current events are horrifying. ICE = Storm Troopers. www.netflix.com/us/title/815...

I hope everyone is safe in the coming weather. Am I being too smug if I post this pic of our woodburning stove that I look forward to firing up for several days in a row. And cooking on if it comes to that.
January 23, 2026 at 4:13 PM
Of course, gotta be sure that's charged up too. I'm not a big fan of e-biking on ice/snow though! Maybe somewhere like Denver or Chicago where it's snow pack, and not ice-under-snow.
