This shows exactly why UK government should be providing MORE funding for the World Service, not risking it’s future. Cost of these services is nothing for government.
BBC's Arabic radio service in Lebanon closed after 85 years as part of a £28.5m savings drive. 'Just months later, in October 2023, the Russian state-owned Sputnik news agency took over the frequency. Its news bulletin opened with “This is Moscow”, replacing the previous “This is London” intro.' 🙄

World Service is so important to so many across the world. And a great asset to the UK’s image abroad. Govt should be increasing funding!
This is part of a bigger story that hasn't had much coverage about the FCDO being cut to ribbons.

Development funding has been slashed but foreign office staff are also being reduced by 20-30%.
And another bites the dust?

The BBC World Service will run out of funding in just seven weeks. Its funding arrangement with the Foreign Office finishes at the end of March. There is no plan for what happens next.

Worth pointing out that total amount of debt is largely meaningless. Unless you earn a LOT of money you’ll never pay it off
“I borrowed in total £55,000…”

“How much do you owe now?"

“£72,000”

@vicderbyshire.bsky.social speaks to Dr Arthur Joustra, a trainee paediatrician, about how his student loan debt has risen since he graduated in 2022 - despite making payments.

Perplexed at this. The mid-market restaurant is in a bad way, and frankly what has changed to make Jamie’s Italian a better proposition than it was six years ago?
