Journalists were arrested & some critics killed under suspicious circumstances. By the 2010s, nearly all significant media voices that challenged the Kremlin had been silenced, either by regulatory pressure, or revocation of broadcasting rights. The justification was always framed as “public order”

When Putin consolidated power in Russia, one of his earliest and most decisive moves was to seize control of the media environment. Independent television channels such as NTV, once critical of the Kremlin, were stripped of their licenses or taken over by state-aligned companies in the early 2000s.

Over time, the state either directly owned or heavily pressured every major outlet, ensuring that no independent national broadcast platform survived. Print and radio followed. Licenses for independent newspapers and radio stations were revoked or transferred.

if you want to understand tailoring, you only need to watch mid-century movies, when actors were dressed by tailors, not brands. in the 1944 film cover girl, gene kelly's suit drapes beautifully, moving with him, not against him. collar stays on his neck, even as he dances.

We need unity, not division. We need to remember history so we don't keep repeating it. Retribution and postering will never bring peace.

BREAKING: BlueSky is blocking access to Mississippi.

This is the No. 1 platform for @mississippifreepress.org.

We ditched X for BlueSky early this year.

And now, at 3 pm on a Friday, poof.

I don't know what we'll do next.

Keep up with us using our newsletter at mfp.ms/subscribe.

Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.
