Journalists were arrested & some critics killed under suspicious circumstances. By the 2010s, nearly all significant media voices that challenged the Kremlin had been silenced, either by regulatory pressure, or revocation of broadcasting rights. The justification was always framed as “public order”

Over time, the state either directly owned or heavily pressured every major outlet, ensuring that no independent national broadcast platform survived. Print and radio followed. Licenses for independent newspapers and radio stations were revoked or transferred.
