Phew! That was a frantic 40 mins - hope I caught up and didn't miss anyone's comments and apologies for typos. Typing at speed not my forte #devonbookhour So interesting to look back and think about books written long ago as against those that are within (most of our) living memories

Just checked - yes, around 1870, though interestly set in the late 1820's. I confess I prefer to Austen (I can say that cos @austennerd.bsky.social isn't here tonight 🤣) #devonbookhour
Middlemarch is considered Victorian literature, so later I’d say #devonbookhour 📚

Waveley was 1814 so yes! @marinasofia.bsky.social #devonbookhour
I guess most of Jane Austen's novels fit there. Perhaps Sir Walter Scott? Castle of Otranto or was that later?

The 1990s includes Harry Potter, Game Of Thrones, Philip Pullman - so lots of allegory and fantasy but also Gaiman, Nick Hornby, Michael Ondatje and many more - a different kind of romance to the 1810's? Also, more books about travel than the 1810's #devonbookhour

10 minutes til this week's #devonbookhour. Join us for general chat but also to discuss books from 1810-20 and 1990-2000. You've just got time to do a search on those decades to see what you loved, or which slipped you by. How has writing changed in that time, I wonder?

Elif Shafak (one of my favourite writers) asks, in a Substack post...

Strange, strange times…
How do we find the right balance between life and literature? ...
... the question seems important. Universal. Urgent— because the centre does not hold anymore.

Thoughts?

I shan't be hosting #devonbookhour this evening but I've had a new idea for our chats. Each month I'll choose two decades and I'd love to hear about the books you'd pick out from those years. To start us off 1810-1820 and 1990-2000. Look forward to the discussion next Monday 😀
