Setting up a BlueSky feed to embed here: https://www.uncglibraries.com/degreeslater - wanna follow the path of neoliberalism's detrimental effect on higher ed? Check it out. Especially made for students <3
It's not the universities' fault. It's because this administration is destroying higher Ed in this country intentionally.
Now let's talk football programs, smartypants

This is bullshit. Higher ed isn't just job training and you cannot, in this day and age, determine how much money someone is going to earn. For example, I am a baby historian and I am in graduate school. It's not a "lucrative career" path but it's an important one. 1/5

Amazon's new $50 wearable AI device records and transcribes daily activities - a fascinating case study in how surveillance tech gets normalized through consumer convenience. The privacy implications for vulnerable populations deserve serious academic attention. #AcademicSky #AI

Interesting challenge for urbanists! Richardson's linguistics research shows connection to nature erodes with urbanisation, yet nature-connectedness drives pro-environmental behaviours (like biodiversity protection & actions against climate change): doi.org/10.3390/eart...

This is such a good episode. Every academic should listen to it, no matter your discipline, especially now with discussions around intelligence. We all deal with biases and claims of neutrality/objectivity, but what are we really measuring and interpreting, and how? #academicsky

Unreal.
If you’re wondering why your friends in academia are a little on edge right now, it’s because an eighteen-year-old who hasn’t done the reading, doesn’t look at the assignment, and has does no critical thinking skills more complex than “because I think it’s in the Bible” can literally end your career

The University of Oklahoma has removed an instructor who was accused by a student of religious discrimination over a failing grade on a psychology paper in which she cited the Bible and argued that promoting a “belief in multiple genders” was “demonic.” https://cnn.it/4b6g3rd

I hate this for academia.
📑From October: "Pierre Bourdieu famously described sociology as a “martial art“. With this phrase, he emphasised that academic practice is not only a search for truth, but also a form of struggle"

Academic careers have become a professional sport - Impact of Social Sciences
Academia like professional sports is increasingly a system defined by competition, precarity and quantification does this lead to a loss of meaning?

This is why neoliberals and conservatives hate the humanities and social sciences... We study stuff like this, and peace isn't good for the neoliberal agenda.

I can't with these people anymore.
New cut-&-paste legislation for lawmakers to propose across the US targets non-STEM faculty research & teaching for additional scrutiny & higher teaching loads, unless they teach courses in Western Civ & ‘Amercanism,’ which then they could go up for tenure without having research reviewed.

"metrics" are for marketplaces.
Wisconsin public universities could start shedding programs more rapidly. A committee developed a new metric based on enrollment that could increase the number of degrees that get flagged for review.

I don't think they're going to be too successful in Massachusetts. People are far too educated there.

It actually started in the 1970s when conservative and libertarian think tanks came into being. After 10 years of drafting an agenda to do this, they put ole ronnie puppet in office to carry out their first Mandate for Leadership. And oh did he.
100%!!! The wealth & income disparity started with cutting higher education funding and trickle down propaganda in the '80s & expanded with tax cuts in '01, '03 & '17 & near elimination of estate/inheritance taxes in '11.
This IS the GOP long game of re-establishing a WASP aristocracy.
