Ugh. 😫 so painful. A lot of fear/anguish in the scientific community. Trump & DOGE will be responsible for the death of scientific discovery in the US for generations. Discoveries will still happen. But more slowly & elsewhere. They’ll come too late for some people with life-threatening illnesses
I expect that most academic biomedical researchers have considered leaving the US—if only in theory for now. What a colossal mess! Our representatives need to hear this. Please amplify so they know this matters. @levin.house.gov @repscottpeters.bsky.social @schiff.senate.gov @padilla.senate.gov
“For the last 75 yrs, the NIH has been the biggest funder of biomedical research in the world. Most advances in medicine were seeded by NIH funding. When we became scientists, we just bought into this system. This is how it works. — @tuthill.bsky.social 🧵

I’m not surprised. They basically chose a leader who wears a tin foil hat as his crown. Also he’s not exactly someone you’d expect to care about the well being of people let alone women.
The NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health was created in 1990.

Women’s health issues didn’t exist before then.

(actually most people just didn’t care)

I’m sure the website is down because we’ve solved all those problems. /s

Winnipeg, 7pm on a Saturday night driving down a busy street (Osborne). Feels like -22 C outside. Someone’s car breaks down half way into the intersection. Within a minute four different cars stop and four people run out to help push it out of the way and to safety. That’s what Canadian values are.

Reminds me of the pain my ex-PI and I went through trying to create mutants of this species during grad school. I was working with an XDR strain that resisted all clinical antibiotics except colistin. I was crying because of the stress. My PI was crying because of the amount of Zeocin I had to use 😅

A very insightful paper I came across earlier today! I highly recommend reading this.
A paper in Nature Human Behaviour reports that web-browsing reflects and affects mental health. Poorer mental health leads to more negative consumption, which in turn worsens mood. Highlighting webpage emotional impacts reduced negative browsing and improved mood. https://go.nature.com/3CExy2E 🧪

Decided to switch to this platform from twitter (or X or whatever you prefer calling it) alongside my fellow scientific community. I hope @bsky.app is able to provide us with a better experience.
