Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian, Australian, or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.

Tires (not straws) are a top source of microplastic #pollution.

As they wear down, toxic particles wash from roads into waterways and harm wildlife. But scientists have found a cheap fix: biofilters made from wood chips and plant waste.
One of the biggest microplastic pollution sources isn’t straws or grocery bags – it’s your tires
Rain storms wash those tire shards into streams and ultimately into lakes and oceans. That’s bad news for fish and other aquatic life.

Protected bike lanes have a near-magical ability to produce cyclists.

This new study of 28 US cities finds that census block groups w/protected bike lanes expanded bike commuting almost 2x faster than those w/standard bike lanes & >4x faster than those w/o new lanes.

DC has a population greater than Vermont or Wyoming (and equivalent to Alaska or Delaware).

Just try to imagine the apocalyptic levels of outrage we'd see on every airwave if the federal government tried to impound Wyoming's budget, and shuttered its single largest employer.

Wouldn't it be great if Washington had its own newspaper that could publish these kinds of stories about local office break-ins with national and global implications?
“They apparently just sort of walked past security and said: ‘Get out of my way,’ and they’re looking for access for the IT systems, as they have in other agencies,” said a former Noaa official. “They will have access to the entire computer system, a lot of which is confidential information.”
Doge staffers enter Noaa headquarters and incite reports of cuts and threats
Members reportedly sought access to IT systems at agency that Project 2025 has called ‘harmful to US prosperity’

Trucks have been getting bigger, more energy & space consuming, more polluting, and much deadlier to everyone around them including kids. Not because most of us actually need bigger vehicles, but as ego boosts, status symbols & “indicators of male virility.” Note the truck bed is basically the same.

This should not move forward without a similarly sized rebate for Californians who take transit, bike, or walk - the folks already doing their part to address the climate crisis.

At what point does “ I remember listening to this album at the headphone-listening stations at the Virgin Megastore in Union Sq” become the xennial equivalent of “I used to love going to the Automat and Nickelodeon with my girlfriends”
