“Word of the “knit-ins” quickly spread by word of mouth and social media: when a friend at her local knitters guild mentioned the protest, knitwear designer Michele Lee Bernstein decided to attend to show that Portland wasn’t “burning to the ground”.”

One of my favorite presents ever—my dad found and framed this pic of my mother @sunminkimes.bsky.social at a Seattle courthouse after she passed her US citizenship test in 1981. Like so many of the people who come here to start a new life, she is the best of us—the bravest, strongest person I know.

Give it up for universalist liberalism
What if welcoming newcomers *is* its way of life and story as a people? Huh? What then, bucko?

The second Trump administration has really reinforced the idea for me that as bad as liberalism was as a paradigm in national politics (with fights being between the left and right poles of liberalism), it was probably the best we could do. And far preferable to this fascist hellscape.
I had missed this latest delirium by Adrian Vermeule on birthright citizenship

'Common law?! NAH, it's the Roman law of adoption that should govern the interpretation of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution!'

A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

On another note, I read a lot of non-soccer books too this year and this was by far my favorite. The writing and insight are incredible. It is not a dry history book! It's lively but also benefits from a lifetime of academic engagement in the subject.
