Hi, I'm David - you might be here because I:

Reconciling that "solving programming" is a good outcome for "tech", at the same time it being at it's core extractavist technology that levels the last tool of social mobility we had that swings the power back to the billionaire class has been one of the most disorienting moments of my career.

Maybe the next movement we need is something akin to "Reliable Computing".

The tools are here to stay, but a standard around "Human Designed" software. Vetted, reviewed, edited, cleaned up. Software that offers high standards of reliability and operability with externalised, executable specs.

And I'm outside in the dark
Staring at the blood red moon
Remembering the hopes and dreams I had
And all I had to do
And wondering what became of that boy
And the world he called his own
I'm outside in the dark
Wondering how I got so old

Ok, so I wrote a very long and kinda personal thing about existential dread and the end of programming, and I'm not really sure I want to endure the discourse, but if you want to read it, it's here - gist.github.com/davidwhitney...

It's like 6,000 words long, sorry.

This looks fun and relatable to my actual life - though I'll probably never get over the cultural squish of 2000s alternative subculture into "emo / elder emo" because whilst we all existed in the same spaces, metal, goth, alt, emo were all distinct and often unrelated things with shared spaces.
I Write Games Not Tragedies - a narrative-rhythm game about British emo/goth subcultures from the early 2000s, with original music - has launched on itchio today.

Can you learn AND offload? Yes. We do it all the time across our days. You just cannot do every single thing at once, and have to think about the structural support for different (sometimes competing) goals.

Self-regulation isn't new, but it is a vital skill for developers now.

honestly tired of trying to convince people that trump's immigration policy is not really about violent undocumented immigrants or even just undocumented immigrants, but immigrants in general and even non-white people more broadly.
cool, cool. so we are sort of like citizens, but not really?

Repost for visibility in case anyone has some IIS advice w/ BetterStack that's up to date.
@davidwhitney.co.uk do you have any experience of forwarding logs from IIS to something like BetterStack?

Having an absolute nightmare with various dying daemons, things that don't understand log rotation and so on?

What do people on the Windows-IIS stack do to drain logs to a third-party?

Layla has been working on this fun immersive sim style project for the last couple years - we all know how long things take to gestate so really excited to see this coming along 💪🏻

I'm pretty sure the disruption to come for this space is the proliferation of local models that while not frontier are mostly as good.

They're power efficient, effectively free at the point of use, and constrained by default. Much more interesting to me than "let random remote server farm work"

LLM code gen is allergic to software design.

It's a side-effect of limited context - drives it to primitive obsession and a bunch of other smelly designs.

You can navigate it to good outcomes, but it's very reflective of the difference between "scripts" and "software" if you don't pay attention.

Spiritbox robbed yet again at the Grammys.

Every year we get closer to some mainstream award show finally understanding heavy music but today is not the one.

Is there a worse login experience than the SendGrid + Twilio merger for people that had accounts on both previously.

Horrendous amount of resets / confirms, I think I'm on my 5th confirmation code? Gives Microsoft login a run for its money.

I worked on a bunch of improvements to #MLforKids over Christmas.

Last day of my month long holiday firebreak today.

Haven't really touched a computer other than for games in that time and... I could go another month 😂

Finishing off my Cyberpunk replay where I play it like a stealth game / imsim and it's the game that keeps on giving 🖤

It would appear that uncritically funding the people that hate us so much that they mint coins commemorating body counts instead of listening to the people who said that the institutional rot within the police is so deeply engrained that they represent a danger to us all has mysteriously backfired.
