Yes - I think ITV was considered to be for the working classes, the BBC for the lower middle classes and “upward”. Definitely a thing in our household.

England has its best chance of winning the World Cup since 1970 but I hope it is boycotted by every nation with cojones - Brazil, Spain, Italy, France. Don't expect England to boycott it because our PM's a pathetic lickspittle but I hope at least it's rendered devoid of meaning as a tournament.

I was such a Sunderland fan this evening for obvious reasons but loved the relentlessly encouraging roar of the fans, how that galvanised the team in every way - solidity, forays upfield, defensive blocking. City might have scored but so might have Sunderland. And great to see Xhaka so pivotal.

Ronnie Biggs died 12 years ago today. Bless him. He was the people's train robber, the driver cosher of our hearts. He was the true spirit of punk. God knows what he'd make of music today. Ambient, emo, rap. Is that what him and Sid died for? He'd probably fuck off back to Brazil in despair.
