The #math community seems to be growing here and becoming more active. I have presented on how to get the most of being in a community like this many times and here are my tips to grow this PLN and make it useful for educators.

Tips to move beyond a “lurker” (and/or start to interact with the Online Math Community) Like - Who benefits: You (it acts like a bookmark) & the Poster (“Yay someone liked what I said”) Repost - Who benefits: You (it acts like a bookmark), the Poster (“Wow, they liked enough to share it”) & the rest of us (Reposting sends it back to the top of the feed increasing the chance of your followers and their followers to see it) Comment - Who benefits: You (interaction brings more friends and knowledge), the Poster (the conversation they started continues) & us (entices us to become part of the conversation too) Post - Who benefits: You (sharing thoughts and resources help to hone your own ideas) & Everyone else (the more discussion, the higher the chance we all learn) Tips for making your Posts more visible: Add an image - including a visual has been shown to increase the interaction Include hashtags (not too many) - a hashtag categorizes your Post and makes it visible to a wider audience than just your followers. Here are some math related hashtags that relate to education: #MathChat #MathsChat #MTBoS #iTeachMath #ElemMathChat #MathArt #MathSky Tag some people (not too many) - you can tag relevant people (even those who don’t follow you) in the Post or in the Image to increase the conversation potential

Shared a Thanksgiving gift with my data science students today! I spend a couple months collecting used copies. Next month we will read chapter 3 Arms Race and reflect on feedback systems and the susceptibility and sensitivity of data models to manipulation.
