My Charlemagne column this week: REQUIEM

The Atlantic alliance, storied as it might be, is increasingly unworthy of the name. It is dead, or dying.

Europe is going through the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression -- and soon acceptance.

It's only Wednesday, Captain...
Just to finish a bad week on a bad note, the EU has circulated a paper around the WTO suggesting the organisation is dead if China keeps growing in its current manner.

Which certainly reflects a strain of G7 thinking, but it was previously thought to be mostly a US one...
In news you may have missed, this is what I mean about both Europe and North America rejecting the rules they put in place because they don't like the the competition.

Looks as if, despite the European Parliament legal action, the EU/Mercosur trade deal will apply provisionally with any Mercosur state that ratifies it

(BTW the Commission press release and Q and As give the opposite impression)
The Council decision on signature and provisional application has created a legal obligation for the EU institutions that is non-discretionary.*

*There's a joke about two lawyers and three different views somewhere here, but the text of the decision is very clear.

Absolutely irresponsible. This is what one calls an own goal. Those against #EU #Mercosur should vote against in consent procedure instead of using delaying tactics under the guise of legal review. Very harmful for our economic interests and standing. Team Europe putting itself offside.

European Parliament defers EU - Mercosur agreement to the Court of Justice.

This is not good news, but it does not "freeze" the deal. Provisional application kicks in once one or more Mercosur states have notified the EU of their agreement to do so.

1/ New Kiel Institute study on 2025 tariffs. The headline finding won't shock anyone who studied 2018-19 tariffs: near-complete pass-through to US importers. Foreign exporters absorbed ~4% of burden; Americans paid ~96%.
