Applied mathematical modeller at Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland working on a variety of parasites (mainly gastrointestinal nematodes), vectors (mainly mosquitoes) and sometimes I dabble in Bayesian inference (currently avian influenza in seabirds).

A nice thread highlighting key findings from our new paper estimating parameters of #HPAI in subsequent outbreaks in common terns. We developed a Bayesian inference approach to infer parameters from just carcass counts. #seabirds #statisticalecology #diseaseecology

Nipped downstairs for a coffee and a short break. My 2 year old took one look at me and shouted, "Go back to work!".

Delighted to have BBC feature our citizen science mosquito reporting project. Huge thx to members of the public who have got in touch since last year with sightings from all across Scotland. Great if we can keep it going this summer: report at www.mosquito-scotland.com

I'm going to be on BBC Scotland lunchtime live and the 7 oclock news talking about vector-borne disease risk in Scotland. Fingers crossed all goes well. Going to require a serious caffeine hit after a few relatively sleepless nights since baby #2 arrived on Sunday!

Two types of code comments.
- What the code is doing (the code already tells you that).
- Why the code should do that (useful).

This is such an important post. We don't stop fighting at any marker, we don't yield fifty yards of the field - we fight for the next inch / decimal place.
#1.51
A gentle reminder that if we miss the 1.5°C target (and we certainly will), the next target is 1.51°C and not 2°C. We need to keep fighting.

Every tonne of CO₂ emitted makes the job of future CO₂ removal harder, and every 0.01°C of temperature increase makes the world more chaotic and dangerous.
