Since we’re in the mood for strict accuracy in broadcast news, worth noting that a rival channel had a pundit - unchallenged - say asylum seekers in hotels committed 44% of sexual offences in one county, seemingly because she cannot understand basic maths.
A national newspaper journalist went on a British TV channel to claim police stats showed asylum-seekers committed 44% of sex crimes in Dorset.
This shocking claim was treated as fact by the channel which promoted the clip on social media where it was amplified by AI.
Except... it's bollocks.

Yes, most people leave jobs paying $2600 a month (minimum wage where I live) so they can get $188 worth of food stamps a month (average food stamp payment).
That math definitely maths.

Thirdly, they espouse the tired trope of real world relevance. For an august body that focusses on evidence, this is very disappointing. Work from David Thomas and Axiom maths, and our own work in Maths Horizons, shows a necessity for problem solving and challenge, not “maths through recipes”

If you make $100,000 a year (not bad), it will take you 10 MILLION years to earn a trillion dollars.
If you make a million dollars a year (wow!), it'll still take you a million years to earn a trillion dollars.
Tax the rich.

I didn't study geology because I wanted to do maths or computer programming. They do not interest me. I wanted to learn about rocks etc.
I also have severe dyslexia and dyscalculia. I literally cannot *do* maths beyond a basic level. Should that preclude people like me from geo/earth sciences.

Unfortunately, in many courses in geosciences worldwide, university-level mathematics and computational geosciences is not included, as my experience from processing this year’s masters applications suggests.

on that topic, i recently learned as well that often around ADHDrs learning can be really difficult if you don't really understand the WHY behind everything you're trying to learn and maths have been a blessing

there are about 10 vacant homes for every homeless person in Ireland - and I know that's oversimplified and imperfect maths, but I'm still mad

So where did the "116 cases" and the "44%" come from?
My theory is a different FOI done several months before by The Daily Mail - which doesn't support the claim but looks like the source of some embarrassingly bad maths.
