OMG it’s perfect. They nailed it. It’s 1985 again. I’m so happy.

I know I said I wouldn't go on about it, but seeing my own artwork all over an article in the Guardian online this week was a nice surprise.

At a time when my future career is looking a tad uncertain, it's interesting to think about what happens next.

"What I love about the machine is this seamless integration of modern tech into a retro environment."

A huge thank-you to the team at @theguardian.com for this glowing 5/5 review.

Had a lot of fun servicing this 1541 drive. Sent to me as not reading disks, soon sorted but wouldn't write anything. Faulty sensor, bypassed for testing but the owner wants to keep it as a read-only drive. Okay then!

Someone had gone mad with white lithium grease also, it had gone everywhere.

PSA: the small and mighty SIDKick Pico works perfectly with the Commodore 64 Ultimate, before you go spending three figures on an original SID chip in case the on-board UltiSID doesn't float your boat.

Playing with the new SIDKick Pico firmware and getting slightly obsessed with 6581 filter curves, and the work of Antti S. Lankila. His web site has been offline for a while, but the Wayback Machine saves the day:

Oh yeah, I used this stuff to get the exact profile for the posts that turn the tape spindles in this cassette mechanism when 3D-modelling it. I probably should get out more.

I'm only calling them this from now on.
It's fascinating to see the changes in one company's logo over the years.

Playing IK+ on my laptop screen with a real C64 using a video capture device through OBS. It's harder, but somehow there is still less input lag than TheC64 Mini.

With the revival of the much-loved Commodore brand and the new team who put so much faith in me as a hobbyist, I got to see my own work all over the Internet for much of this year. 🤯

Heading into 2026, I will finally shut up about it [muffled cheering]. Happy New Year you lovely people! 🎉

Holy sh*tballs! The SIDKick Pico firmware just got updated, adding filter curve adjustment options and - get this - presets! I have never seen a SID replacement with presets before.

Set it on 6581R4AR and fired up my go-to test from the late, great Peter Clarke. Have a listen for yourself. 🎧

I only had one thing on my wish list this Christmas, and here it is. That's tomorrow evening's entertainment sorted.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social's Mystery Hour board game! 😀

This made my day. It is extraordinary to see photos of something I designed (the box that is, not the product) from all around the world. This one from France is is the best yet, because he's in the photo, holding it.

My enduring memory of Chris Rea will be that time he was on Shooting Stars, and he really couldn't be bothered with all that nonsense.

R.I.P. Chris 😢

Brand new Zzap! 64 just arrived. That will go nicely with my brand new C64 (and the latest FREEZE64 which I have been saving for the Christmas break).

California Games cover weirdly aligned with the Christmas issue. I remember buying the original issue on a scorching hot Saturday in August. 🫠

Nit-pick of the week. Fairly sure this would only make the problems list if you're storing sensitive data on your C64 Ultimate. I'm not going to lose any sleep over my hacker neighbour Wiresharking my tape copy of Wizball.

How did I not know until today that the HDMI overlay menu on the Ultimate64 and C64U was a thing?

Ha, C64 Ultimate in bits already. Whenever I get a new 64 in the house, I take it apart. Today is no exception.
