Ridiculously poor phone pic, proper camera is in for repairs, but it's a record shot of a surprise butterfly patch tick this morning, Clouded Yellow, along the bank of the cut-off channel in Wretton, Norfolk @norfolkbutterflies.bsky.social

Is it us or would this shot make a fantastic book (or album) cover? 🧑‍🎨

A heron takes off in-front of the fiery setting sun near the River Thurne. Well done to Will for capturing this incredible shot!

A superb capture of a Bearded reedling perched up at Hickling Broad ✨

Males sport a bold black ‘moustache’ against soft tawny plumage. These fascinating birds build intricate, globe-shaped nests among reeds near water and often chatter in small flocks outside breeding season.

High temperatures over North Africa from midweek and a southerly airflow, should provide better conditions for long distance insect dispersal. Wednesday and especially Thursday look to be the warmest days of the week, with Thursday and Friday the pick of the nights. #teammoth

Following the recent good weather now is a good time to take stock of butterfly sightings in Norfolk. Brimstone and Commas being the most numerous, Peacocks Red Admirals and Small Tortoiseshell have also been seen. 2 species to add to the 2025 list were see on March 8th, Small White & Specked Wood.

This is Macrocillix maia & he's a moth who mimics bird poo. But he's taken it to the next level, he's also mimicking flies feeding on the bird poo, right down to the shimmer of their wings!

I have wanted to see one for so long, but never thought I would! In Trus Madi entomology camp in Borneo.

What a start to the year for those finding Large Tortoiseshells in Kent! Its eggs are brown, since they're laid on bark, rather than the green of Nettle-feeders. I was also lucky enough to be in the company of @wlangdon12.bsky.social and Matthew Oates when Will found larvae on Portland (below)!

A mild night to come for most of Britain & Ireland. With a warm southerly flow from North Africa (via the nr Continent) & tropical maritime air to the west converging over the UK, it could be an interesting night on south/west coasts. Cornwall to Dorset best placed to see any activity #teammoth
