I like infectious diseases, crafts, and food. Probably in that order.
Jersey girl, NOLA expat, now a Portlander.
This is so sad. Visiting the CDC Museum was one of the highlights of my visit to Atlanta many years ago.

🚨CDC Museum (a Smithsonian affiliate) is being shuttered🚨

Staff are being “un-RIFed” just to close the museum permanently — then RIFed again in Jan

This is bureaucratic cruelty & cultural vandalism

CDC Library is a national treasure

We had an early Thanksgiving potluck at work, and now all I want to do is take a George Costanza nap.
a man in a white shirt and tie is standing in front of a desk with binders on it .
Alt: George Costanza is sitting in his office. He stretches, then crawls under the desk.

Had a rainy bike ride home from work. But my plush new robe was waiting for me when I got here!

I’m at a conference breakout session on music-assisted caregiving. The presenter hasn’t even spoken yet and she just busted out an accordion. This is going to be amazing.

Fuck this fuckery so hard. Her name is Rachel!

In the halls of the Department of Health and Human Services, a photo of Admiral Rachel Levine now hangs -- but with her *deadname* printed beneath it.

It’s a quiet act of cruelty. And it says so much about how this Regime sees trans people.
Biography: Rachel Levine
Rachel Levine became the highest-ranking openly transgender government official in U.S. history when she was confirmed by the Senate as the 17th Assistant Secretary for Health in March 2021.

Saw a woman in a full Log Lady costume this morning. We were both waiting for the light at an intersection (me on bike, her on foot), so I got to tell her how awesome she looked.

Every time I’ve come to the office this month, the internet has gone out. This is not a great way to get people to stop working from home. 🤨

Me, wrapping up an employee’s quarterly review: Is there anything else you’d like to discuss?
Employee: Yeah, what’s Halloween costume going to be?!

They already know me so well.

Got to visit the state public health lab today. It was everything I hoped it would be! I met the genetic sequencing machines that processed all the COVID samples, learned about antibiotic resistance testing, and saw the cool net machine they use for enteric pathogen testing. 🤓

Received an e-mail from the feds that we “may” be able to draw down our awards during the shut down. Thanks? I’d ask my project officers for help interpreting that, but I can’t because they’ve all been sent home.

I can tell that fall is here because I am back on my afternoon dirty chai bullshit. ☕️

Thought I should update y’all on the war zone here in Portland. On Friday night my bf and I had drinks downtown with my cousin and his wife. Yesterday, we had lunch with friends and then ran errands. Today, we had a drink at a fancy bar and are catching a comedy show. Such a hell hole. 😑

I forgot my water bottle at home today and kind of just want to cancel the entire workday now. Can I take a sick day to avoid having to drink out of a random cup I found in the break room?

Found the most amazingly ripe and juicy tomatoes at the farm stand down the street today. They were perfect on tomato sandwiches for dinner.

Bf praised my list-making skills, and I don’t know if I’ve ever felt more loved and appreciated. ☺️

It’s weird to be marking this anniversary so far away from New Orleans. In some ways, it’s helpful that everyone around me is treating it like any other day. Helps keep me distracted. On the other hand, it’s hard to be around a bunch of people who don’t get it.

First out of town conference for the new job is such a comedy of errors. First, it took me 20 minutes of circling around to find the right parking garage. Then, the hotel contacted me to ask why I didn’t check in last night because I made my reservation for the wrong day. 🥴

This was an attack on a federal institution. An attack BECAUSE it is Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This was domestic terrorism.

Why isn’t it getting more press coverage? Some coverage, not enough.

Domestic. Terrorism.

A guy was chatting me up at the Waxahatchee concert and informed me that Jeff Tweedy’s GROWN ASS SON plays the drums for them. 😳👵🏼

Oh good. This webinar about responding to the current moment in the health equity movement has turned into an after action review of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. 🫤

I used to text @renedugar.bsky.social about the particularly twee (or ridiculous) moments I experience in Portland. Since she’s no longer around, I’ll tell y’all:
I rode my bike to a meeting that took place on a colleague’s front lawn sitting on picnic blankets.

After making fun of Portlanders for what they consider humid, I admitted that this morning did feel pretty humid, so I checked my weather app:
