The Striated Caracara, locally called Johnny Rook in the #FalklandIslands were either viciously aggressive dive-bombing heads, or totally chilled very curious. This photo isn't cropped & you can see us in his eye

With its prominent large hooked beak surrounded by a thin area of bare orange skin leading to the black eye it is a formidable bird of prey found in the Falkland Islands.its feathers are mostly dark brown but heavily streaked with pale buff on its chest & head giving the appearance of a pale head in this photo where the light has caught it. They eat everything from carrion to eggs, small birds and will try and force adult seabirds to regurgitate their last meal. They're common around penguin colonies and take chicks.

Heron photos and articles from NASA are one thing, but it's strangely unsettling to watch a post about one's idiosyncratic lifestyle choices go viral. I must say that I did not expect that, having shared the same "Stars Without Cars" blog last year to little uptake. Enough about me; back to herons.

We found a 4th egg in #kakapo Waikawa's nest yesterday and found it was fertile. Waikawa has maintained her incredible 100% fertility record: 5 clutches of 4 fertile eggs in 4 breeding seasons. That's unmatched by any other kākāpō. #kakapo2026 #conservation #birds

They travel in large flocks and do not defend territories during the breeding season. Bohemian Waxwings have a variety of vocalizations, but since some ornithologists distinguish songs from calls by song's function in territoriality, they argue that Bohemian Waxwings don't have a song. Thankfully Freddie Mercury wrote one for them. (We're kidding but it's fun to think of the waxwings singing it.)
