When the federal government released its 1969 White Paper that sought to end treaty rights and Indian Status, Harold Cardinal responded with his landmark book The Unjust Society.
It helped spark a new Indigenous rights movement in Canada.

On this day in 1992, Dr. Roberta Bondar went into space on the Space Shuttle Discovery. She was the first Canadian woman, and the first neurologist, to go into space. She spent eight days, one hour and 14 minutes orbiting the Earth and conducted 40 experiments in Spacelab.

On this day in 1956, Sam Langford died.
Born in 1886 in Weymouth Falls, Nova Scotia, he is called the Greatest Fighter Almost Nobody Knows. One of the best boxers of his era, he won 210 fights in his career, including 126 by knockout.
