#JamesBarryDiary 7/1/1875 Storming and snowing all day from the N.E. – it was a devil of an ugly day indeed, and still it is at it from the same direction as nearly. There must be great banks in many places on the road and no mistake. I cleared the kiln and the mill this afternoon complete.

People will read old newspaper clippings
IN 2026 In "twenty-twenty-six" as our great-ditto-grandchildren will call it, some collector of rare manuscript will exhibit an old newspaper, published in May 1926, giving an account of the first flights by airplane and airship to the North Pole. The value of the clippings will be due to their academic content, or, if our language is too academic, we might say, because of the fact that air transportation will then be so common that the people 100 years hence will wonder why it ever was given front page positions. --The Cochran Journal, 17 June 1926

#JamesBarryDiary 5/1/1876 Froze hard last night and blew much and long. This his day was cold and wintery. I was drying all day and I ground to grist's of oats. My stomach was very much out of order last night and all this [day]; so much so that a spell after dinner I hove it all up and more.

On this day in 1898, the Westmount Arena opened at the corner of St. Catherine Street and Wood Avenue. Built to hold 10,000 people, it was home to both the Montreal Wanderers and Montreal Canadiens. It burned to the ground on Jan. 2, 1918. The Wanderers folded soon after.
Black and white vintage photograph of a large empty indoor ice hockey rink from the early 20th century. The ice surface is smooth and unmarked, surrounded by steeply banked wooden seating that rises in tiers on all sides. The arena has a high arched roof supported by exposed steel beams and trusses, with tall windows along the upper walls letting in natural light. The stands are completely empty, giving the space a quiet, cavernous feel.

#JamesBarryDiary 30/12/1875 Froze a little last night, but this day was soft and raining some and blowing also. Cunningham attending mill and kiln and myself bookbinding and other knickknacks. I was working a spell in the blacksmith shop. The kiln is near empty. All well. God be praised. Amen. Amen.
