I had the privilege of presenting at two conferences this past week and it reminded me how important community is—particularly for marginalised scholars. Academia can be really isolating without institutional support and getting the chance to spend time with other queer ECRs felt so rejuvenating.

Just a note to say that @rebeccamatthews.bsky.social didn’t get a chair role. Ray did.
This is the standardised response you're likely to get. Sure, you cannot control the result of Ray Chung being re elected. But what is your plan to make women feel safer in politics in Wellington? Because you're not going to be subjected to racist misogynist abuse (out of sight /mind). #nzpol

Here's some good news: when we harness trained our indoor cat so she could go on little walkies outside, it turns out we also trained her to wear Halloween costumes that are harness shaped.

Mouse's greatest fears are:

1. Weather
2. Vacuum (tiny indoor weather)
3. Rain pants (weather adjacent)

I'm heading to Brisbane/Sunshine Coast for a conference late Nov/early Dec. Anyone have any recs for places to eat/visit while I'm in the area? I'm limited to public transport but very good at walking (and already made plans to pat wombats, the #1 priority of any Australia visit).

It says so much about our senior leadership team that the university has formally backed kiwi for bird of the year. Incredible lack of imagination.

Our online roundtable about trans screen media is tomorrow! Can't yet confirm if the cat will make an appearance, but the chance of her popping up during a Zoom call is never zero.

It's official. I'm gonna be seeing wombats in November.

Emotionally devastated myself by thinking about how the cat probably thinks we don't love her because we are never trying to make biscuits out of her.

26 years after Georgina Beyer became the first openly trans Member of Parliament, our first non-binary MP is forced to resign following death threats and ongoing abuse. This is such an indictment of NZ politics. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...
Green MP Benjamin Doyle resigns from Parliament
They said they had been on a "journey of healing" which could not be done while in Parliament.

WCC HAS PASSED OUR RAINBOW ACTION PLAN 🏳️‍🌈♥️

Wellington’s Rainbow community has played a huge role in shaping our city’s history, culture, and creativity. However, we also know that our Rainbow whānau can be some of our most vulnerable, facing a range of disparities across mental health and housing.

This is great! I hope the board listens to its members, bans the agitator, apologizes to the WOC and trans woman on the receiving end of his violence, commits to a racism and harassment free space at confs & communication, and finally acknowledges the genocide and scholasticide in Palestine.

Amen!
And there we have it. A call to boycott SCMS this year.
