Physics is under the cosh, Astronomy and Chemistry in peril, Geography is losing territory, English, Modern Languages and History are among the many shrinking UK disciplines.

Surely it's time to have a concerted, structured conversation about universities and the national research base.
UK physics research and science facilities face ‘substantial’ cuts.

Major cuts will hit UK science facilities and government research grants for physics and astronomy over the next four years, Research Professional News can reveal.

Note to academic friends: do you need someone at a German institution to do something for you? Not today you don’t; today is a strike day where, among other things, the unions are fighting for student assistants to get better wages, and for actual change to the awful Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

In a sensible country, this drastic drop in a key export industry and a massive source of soft power, would be an absolute headline panic for the government.

It won't be.

The misery behind the headlines of job cuts in HE 👇
I’ve been travelling A LOT recently and it occurred to me lately that I’m getting out of dodge when I can. It’s hard to go into work to do your job and people are walking the corridors crying. People are crying in meetings. What kind of management does that to their workforce? Over years?
