Congleton Sustainable Travel
@congletonsustrav.bsky.social
Begun in 2023 as part of Friends of the Earth’s Congleton Climate Action group.

Cong SusTrav is working to maintain and improve local facilities for users of pavements, cycles, buses and trains.

We're here too:

Let's suggest this for all relevant consulations @cheshire-east.bsky.social
Sadly missed it but absolute credit to @lb-southwark.bsky.social running a 'Guided Cycle Consultation' where Officers actually got out & cycled with residents to consult changes. People saying it was the best consultation they've ever seen. FANTASTIC progress that every Council should copy.

A new badly needed local bus service to link the centre with retail outliers, plus resume serving people on the west side of town. Thanks @cheshire-east.bsky.social for funding this. If enough people use it to make it commercially successful, it could run and run.

Now there’s a thought…
Design vehicles to fit the streets rather than streets designed to fit the vehicles.

Good to have evidence, even if from abroad. @kaywesley.bsky.social pass it on to your cllr colleagues please, since it seems you’re the only one on here. Also @sarahrussellmp.bsky.social pass it on to your MP colleagues.
If you’re media covering bike-lanes, watch this news story.

If you’re a downtown business association discussing bike-lanes, watch this news story.

If you’re anyone hearing the LIE that bike-lanes are bad for business, watch this story.

And please SHARE THIS STORY so others can watch it too.
WATCH: Seriously, if you’re following ANY bike-lane debate, you HAVE TO WATCH this news story. You actually can’t make this up. Ford claims without evidence that bike-lanes are bad for small business, and THE ACTUAL BUSINESS ASSOCIATION obliterates him with data.

Safe bike-lanes mean business.

We do have one like this in Congleton town centre. Marvellous. Others only change once there’s a gap in the traffic. 🙄 Or that’s what it feels like in the pouring rain.
Unless there's an unbreakably valid safety reason why not, all button-operated pedestrian crossings should activate the lights in pedestrians' favour instantly when pressed.

Let’s hope the devolved Cheshire & Warrington authority will implement 20mph in Cheshire East. 🤞
It was no surprise that the award winning Welsh 20mph default urban/village limit was heavily featured in the RSGB national conference today. A 25% reduction in casualties, £45 reduction in insurance all make it a great example of how 20mph limits make better places to be.

Yes please in Cheshire. @cheshire-east.bsky.social

N.B. These are protected cycleway lanes, not white paint cycleway lanes. @cheshire-east.bsky.social

These would be good for Congleton but need a rota of volunteer parents to run them. Get in touch if you like the idea.
New #bikebus day in #edinburgh. Great to have Saint Peter's school join the active travel revolution by starting up a bike bus. @spokes.org.uk @cyclingweekly.com @cyclinguk.bsky.social @sustrans.bsky.social @edinburghcouncil.bsky.social Thanks for your support @policescotland.bsky.social

No alt txt facility so here's the description: A group of people plus two dogs standing in front of a Congleton sign on a platform. Two placards held up stating: 'No excuses Sunday trains now!' and 'No more excuses Sunday trains now!'
Can you spare a minute to help this campaign?

Interesting. Let’s have more traffic-free streets in our town centres. @cheshire-east.bsky.social

Exactly. Pavements are for people. For problems, phone 101 or go to www.cheshire.police.uk/police-force... but for yellow lines, phone Cheshire East parking enforcement on 0300 123 5020 or email parkingenforcement@cheshireeast.gov.uk

A new study models 20mph/30kph effects on cycling and traffic. A useful nuance is "negligible impact on journey times...due to lowered speed limits largely being applied on local streets instead of larger, ‘busier’ roads designed to maximise the flow of traffic"

Reducing speed limits to 20mph protects cyclists and doesn’t delay traffic, new research finds
Researchers in Australia modelled traffic stress levels according to varying speed limits… and the results are no surprise

If it isn't in the plan then it won't happen. So make sure to state concerns and compliments. Significant plans to give children a brighter future or same old pollution and hazards? Swerving funds from eye-wateringly expensive road schemes to buses + people using feet/wheelchairs/cycles?

A productive afternoon for removal of obstructions. Thank you Simon.
We met Simon Wallace of CE Ringway Jacobs today re obstructions. A productive discussion about various bollards and railings that he has earmarked for removal. We also highlighted where steps should be ramps. We being BTR or @congletonsustrav.bsky.social or Val and Ant as individuals.

Exactly - we need to make sustainable travel more accessible and our group is working on this for Congleton.
We are hugely honoured that our #BetterBusStops campaign has won Campaign of the Year at the #WomeninGreenBusiness awards!

Judges praised the "impactful" campaign - led by @silviyabarrett.bsky.social - for "making sustainable transport more accessible."

Our neighbours have 20mph - when can we have this in Cheshire East? @cheshire-east.bsky.social

Perhaps Congleton town council can apply - we could help suggest some schemes 🤔

An interesting read that highlights Congleton’s current situation with house building.

We really do need simpler fare pricing. But first we need trains - we have had no Sunday trains in Congleton for 12 months.
I can confirm once again that it would probably be easier to have a conversation with a sheep in Latin than buy the correct train ticket for a journey in the UK. 🐑

Today I’m travelling to Leeds for work, and given my past troubles in this area, my boss, the ticket guru, … 1/10
