Science is under attack in the US.
And no, we don't just mean trans research as Trump keeps saying. We mean cancer research, Alzheimer's research, vaccine research, and all those other things that improve health and longevity.

Important thing to beat people over the head with: Trump has turned American cities into warzones and for fucking what? Prices are way up, jobs will be way down, the dollar is worth less, and now the highway is blocked off by cops. Maybe the Great Mythical Immigrant wasn’t the problem after all.

Thanks so much to @jeremymberg.bsky.social for helping us bring attention to the impact of funding delays within our ADRC networks. Wish my first NYT quote could have been something related to cool science but these are times we live in!

I’ve spent most of the day reviewing grants for NIH study section and I’m not gonna lie…feeling pretty demoralized. My own grants are in limbo, including a non competing NoA for the next year of funding that was supposed to start today and is still pending. Sigh.

JAMA Insights: More than 30% of US adults have low health literacy, which affects their ability to understand and use health information, necessitating improved communication strategies from clinicians and health care systems.

Could someone explain to me how to do this fraud? We spent 20k out of pocket while having our Autistic kids be denied SEVENTEEN times, now we reapply every year to ensure that they haven’t been “cured”. Some fraud sure would have saved me a lot of time.
So, no. There is no evidence of fraud.
WELKER: Do you have any actual evidence that the people who will lose Medicaid coverage are engaging in fraud?

MIKE JOHNSON: Well, there is a tremendous amount of fraud in Medicaid

Since 2022, my colleagues and I have been targeted by political attacks. Early on, we worried that political actors would specifically target our projects & universities for defunding. But in the end, they came after everyone. The strategy of keeping heads down was never the right one.
Great article with lots of perspectives from scientists who are scared to speak out — and other scientists who are scared of what will happen if they don't. Trump & Musk & Kennedy are devastating U.S. research and setting progress back decades

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

In my opinion, the U.S. is facing a greater public health threat from Robert WTF Kennedy Jr. than we do from COVID19.

He has the power to undermine *all* vaccinations in the U.S. and therefore the world.

It’s hard to fully take this on board when Congress idly sits by, courting disaster.

To talk about children with autism like this - like they are irreparably damaged and a burden to society - is ignorant, mean and callous.

This man simply has no idea what he’s talking about. He brings shame to America.

Thank you @peterhotezmdphd.bsky.social for these important words. I am the parent to two Autistic children. I don’t know what they will be yet, but I do know their lives are worth living without a “cure”, they are brilliant and kind. More than I can say for any member of the current administration.
My adult daughter Rachel works everyday, pays taxes, loves going to movies with her friends, and listens to awful (IMO) music.
