i think the executive orders directing agencies to end energy efficiency regulations and open up more land to drilling and mining is so indicative of the character of the american right — in its view everything, whether people or our larger environment, is something to be exploited and dominated

The Senate confirmed Marco Rubio as Secretary of State by a vote of 99-0.

Democrats offer an endless supply of goodwill to Republicans that will never be reciprocated.

Just sit it out. Sure. Just quietly endure. I’m sure it will all be fine.

Musk comes from a family that moved to South Africa *for* the racism. He has repeatedly endorsed Great Replacement Theory in the US & Neo-Nazis of the AfD in Germany. He championed the rights of white nationalists and restored Nazi accounts to Twitter.

But I'm sure the Nazi salute was an accident.

I feel like between 2006-2010 I had such a unique experience of the internet and I long for it constantly:

text-based roleplaying forums (Star Wars, HSWCW), habbo hotel, even Racing Frogs

I feel like I'm the only person who ever even heard of, let alone did, these things.

now that authoritarian bullies are in charge, Zuck can get rid of the pretense he cares about race-baiting right wing propaganda and hate speech online, and fully pursue mindless engagement chasing under the pretense he's just super interested in free speech and fighting "censorship"
Meta gets rid of fact checkers and says it will reduce ‘censorship’ | CNN Business
In a number of sweeping changes that will significantly alter the way that posts, videos and other content are moderated online, Meta will adjust its content review policies on Facebook and Instagram,...

This is the stuff I'm a doomer about. Real journalism takes time - even a quick, original 700-word story requires a lot of legwork, relationships, etc.

It can never compete with instant slop, or accounts that just plagiarize news for free with more sensationalistic (and wrong) framing.
"Journalism...is built on the economics of attention"

Facts are boring. Conspiracy theories are exhilarating. Besides, fact checks are happening in spaces where the lie consumers aren't. No Fox News, OAN, Newsmax, NY Post, WSJ oped consumer is reading Politifact or Kessler. JFK is alive, after all.
I wrote about facts v. belief and belonging as the real crisis here:

...listener, subscriber, guest, host, the final word we have for you is ‘Diolch’. Wales needs more high-quality domestic media - especially in English - and we have faith that Hiraeth, or something like it, will exist in the future.

There is no easy way to say this but the time has come to announce that the Hiraeth Pod - in its current form - is coming to an end.

For reasons personal and professional, the team behind the pod are not able to commit to continuing production of pods, live events, and newsletters

Once upon a time, not the entire internet was 4chan. Only 4chan was 4chan, because everywhere else would kick you out for Doing 4chan in their spaces.

It sounds utopian, but it is true.
When social media sites tell you moderation has limits I want you to know there was a time when you could only find the worst people on obscure forums created for being offensive because everywhere else moderated them into those corners.

Listening to the first episode of your podcast now @waterslee.bsky.social - what would you think to a system of separating the Senedd from the Welsh Government? Having FM-appointed and Senedd-approved ministers who aren’t legislators? Would this five ministers more time to focus on the role?

Being in an empty cinema in the middle of the day is one of life's secret pleasures. Do it more often. No one can call you. You can't check the internet. No one knows how baked you may or may not be. They have movies and snacks there, too, but that's just a bonus at this point.

I've always thought there an issue of ego with the Welsh PLP, a fair few of them being anti-devo. Plus, there are just lots of internal political things coupled with taking Wales for granted.

Welsh Labour really need to hurry up and find their identity. Centre left, competent but with some populist distributive stuff throw in. It was the whole point of Welsh Labour.

They've spent 5 years struggling to implement anything and don't seem to know what their fighting for. 1/
