A bike bus has started in Piedmont, due to an AC Transit bus line getting cut. But that’s okay, since a bike bus is “funner.”

The king tide episode has illustrated the future of rising sea levels. But short term thinking about adaptation can lead to bad outcomes. Here is some detailed thinking from a Cal professor.

Another 2,746 e-bikes are on East Bay streets, thanks to rebates from @avaenergy.org and @alamedacountyca.bsky.social.

You can sign up for the monthly rebate drawing at avaenergy.org.

Over 2,000 East Bay residents bought e-bikes with vouchers in the last 6 months
A $10 million fund from Ava Community Energy and Alameda County was used to reimburse e-bike buyers. Meanwhile, a new study shows laws haven’t kept up with e-bike collision risks.

Former Berkeley council member Rigel Robinson has a thoughtful new post on how Paris is making their streets safer for all.

"It’s said that a city’s infrastructure is a direct reflection of its social values. Paris’ streets today, these are streets that say welcome."

You may know that @avaenergy.org has a rebate program for e-bikes. But so does the @airdistrict.bsky.social. When you trade in an old gas-burning car you can get money for e-bikes and transit.

Find these and other incentives through your community energy provider - avaenergy.org/go-electric/...
The Bay Area Air District's Clean Cars for All program helps you retire an older vehicle (model year 2007 or earlier) and receive $7,500 to buy a new e-bike & cycling accessories. You can use the remaining funds for public transit. More: 511cc.org/cc4amobility @ccta.net @bikeeastbay.bsky.social

Too often the City of Berkeley takes action on street safety only after someone has been killed or hurt. Our #visionzero strategy is literally ambulance chasing.

Mayor Mamdani wants to be proactive. Maybe @adenaishii.bsky.social will too. And not just with daylighting, which is already state law.
Mayor Mamdani said over the weekend that he wants the Department of Transportation to add daylighting before someone has been killed rather than wait to ban parking at intersections after a completely avoidable tragedy. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/01/05/m...

Seems like getting your drivers license revoked after going 100 mph+ should be the norm, rather than one possible outcome of an experimental pilot program.

The highway patrol hands out 1,600 citations monthly to drivers exceeding 100 mph. Now the DMV can review cases and “potentially” suspend or revoke licenses before a court decision.

Think they’ll actually do it?

A #SparetheAir Alert has been issued for January 1. Personal fireworks and residential wood burning are expected to cause localized elevated pollution levels. Light rain and winds are not expected to be sufficient to disperse pollution. Wood burning is banned on New Year's Day.

Starting in March, Bay Area electricity bills are going to jump 20-50%, as @pge4me.bsky.social imposes fixed charges. Small consumers, like apartment dwellers, single people, and solar owners will see the biggest jump. @berkeleyside.org @jessearreguin.bsky.social

What happens when utilities raise the fixed charge and lower the energy charge?
Shifting utility costs from usage rates to fixed monthly fees may penalize efficiency and fail to provide the financial incentive necessary to drive widespread electrification.

Asking pedestrians to cross a five-lane, 74'-wide street with no signal or refuge is inviting them to die.

This tragedy, and the countless before it on Caltrans-owned San Pablo Avenue, are the inevitable consequence of car-first, safety-last design.

275 kids and parents just went on a perfect family bike ride through Berkeley, and never once worried about their safety.

Why? Their neighbors organized, and put on a safe, cheerful Kidical Mass. This is the most rewarding stuff I’ll ever do. I think we have more fun than the kids.

Dear @jessearreguin.bsky.social and @buffywicks.bsky.social,

I hope you have had a chance to study this article and the data, and will write legislation to reform DMV.

And @governor.ca.gov, I hope you will sign it.
Earlier this year, the director of CalTrans presented this chart to members of the state Senate’s Transportation Committee, showing a dramatic rise in deaths on California's roads.

No lawmakers asked about the chart. Or what CalTrans was doing about it.
