School absences in the news again, like this time last year.
It's all talk.
NOTHING done to prevent school acquired infections.
Sickness is the highest reason for absences.
Make schools safer = reduce absences.

Two weeks ago, when reacting to the 2022/23 school attendance report, the Minister for Education was dismissive of illness as being a factor.

Today, a separate report shows that child admissions to adult ICU *more than doubled* in 2023.

Basically anyone can get #Longcovid including children who are the ones I am most concerned about because they are the least protected and most exposed group. We urgently need clean air and sensible policies of non attendance with COVID. Failure to rest when infected increases the risk of damage 🧵

Grateful to @togetherwemask.bsky.social for the opportunity to share our experience advocating for children in Irish schools. Ventilation (i.e. open windows/mechanical systems) and appropriately sized hepa filters are necessary to clean the air in school buildings & classrooms to reduce illness.

As I read this, I felt it was a piece of BS. Its concern about absentee students is linked to increase in crime among youth. That’s what this article focusses on. Not once did it touch upon absenteeism being related to illness.

Safe travels and a happy Christmas to everyone! ☺️ When you can't control the environment you're in, and there are lots of crowds travelling from all over, masks remain the most effective way to avoid catching and spreading infections.
“Happy to report that one week after traveling on an 11 hr flight to visit my elderly grandparents during a bad flu season, our masks kept us safe and helped us avoid spreading any airborne viruses to them, and we are able to enjoy Christmas together!”—Sinead O’Brien, @cleanairie.bsky.social

Did you know the main route of transmission of respiratory illness is through the air?.
We call on public health to emphasise this root of transmission so people can take appropriate action to reduce spread of infection during this flu surge.

In Ireland this flu surge is well underway, and we know worse is coming, but the HSE is only introducing piecemeal "restrictions" at hospitals as each one gets overwhelmed.

They should have introduced mandatory masking in ALL healthcare a few weeks ago, but they should definitely do it *RIGHT NOW*.
