OUTRAGE (1950)
Directed, produced & cowritten by Ida Lupino, it was one of the first Hollywood films to center on a rape survivor sensitively & nonexploitatively... even though the Production Code wouldn't allow use of the word "rape".

The Film Noir That Made You a Fan:
THE MALTESE FALCON (1941)
Incredible directorial debut, impeccable script, iconic cinematography, perfect cast. Saw it as a student at the Orson Welles in Cambridge, Mass. (playing a drinking game in the mezzanine) & was hooked for life.

Watched this short yesterday thanks to the Halloween ep of @randomhorror9.bsky.social; had a train ride so set it up w/o hearing their commentary first & had no idea what I was getting into. Startled the poor woman next to me when I was literally jump-scared out of my seat.

Had this gorgeous piece by @rob-sheridan.com running w/o sound today while I was doing guitar exercises. No matter how many times I see NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, I am always taken by how beautiful the framing of the shots is, & watching it this way actually enhances that.

What's your favorite performance in a horror film?
Mine is Ruth Gordon as Minnie Castavet in ROSEMARY'S BABY: Goes from fearlessly funny (e.g. throws herself on the floor & sticks her butt into the camera to clean the carpet; the full-body "WoW!" when admiring the new kitchen) to terrifying (iykyk)

Amen to this! I've spent the last years of my translating career "cleaning up the badly translated texts that [large language models] produce". These computer programs can be great, but they're only as good as the translator using them -- just as a Steinway is only as good as the pianist playing it.
“Writing prompts isn’t a skill, it’s something you can learn quickly on the job if necessary. I don’t believe translators in training should learn how to prompt. To the contrary: they will be the ones that have to clean up the badly translated texts AI produces.”

My dudes, what is this "body-conscious monster for the age of social media" nonsense? Have y'all *seen* the 1823 edition of the first theatrical adaption of the novel, barely 5 years after the book came out? That version of the Creature is a lot prettier than Gullermo del Toro's!

Last night I saw Guillermo del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN at the one and only commercially available cinematic showing in central Madrid. I'm glad I got to see it on a big screen because the costuming and set designs are gorgeous. Jacob Elordi's baby Creature is a marvel, moving like Veidt in CALIGARI.

So, unhappy 105th anniversary, Alexander, King of Greece, dead at just 27 on this day in 1920 from a macaque bite that went septic, leading – one way and another – to a *lot* of other deaths, the birth of modern Turkey, and Prince Philip marrying Queen Elizabeth II... 🧵
