Day 4 — Film Noir Ahead of its Time:
#NoirvemberChallenge
OUTRAGE (1950)
Directed, produced & cowritten by Ida Lupino, it was one of the first Hollywood films to center on a rape survivor sensitively & nonexploitatively... even though the Production Code wouldn't allow use of the word "rape".

I'm a longtime fan of the podcast @shedunnitshow.bsky.social about Golden Age mystery novels & was so pleased they dropped a fun Halloween episode 🕵‍♀️

THE RECKLESS MOMENT is such an underseen gem; thanks for sharing this essay.

Tashlin's take on that old lady tied to a ladder being pitched face down onto the burning pyre & bursting into flames would be a laff riot!

Thanks to a rave review from @randomhorror9.bsky.social, we've been watching KWAIDAN (1964). Spooky & gorgeous.

My dudes, what is this "body-conscious monster for the age of social media" nonsense? Have y'all *seen* the 1823 edition of the first theatrical adaption of the novel, barely 5 years after the book came out? That version of the Creature is a lot prettier than Gullermo del Toro's!

Last night I saw Guillermo del Toro's FRANKENSTEIN at the one and only commercially available cinematic showing in central Madrid. I'm glad I got to see it on a big screen because the costuming and set designs are gorgeous. Jacob Elordi's baby Creature is a marvel, moving like Veidt in CALIGARI.

I really enjoy all of your "Halloween Yule Logs", but THE CABINET OF DOCTOR CALIGARI was my gateway to horror (and to Conrad Veidt fandom) when I first saw it on PBS as a child, so that one has a special place in my heart 🖤🤍🖤

The women's costumes are especially fab in this one!

Maybe also a factor in the reprinting, around the same time, of the LIVE & LET DIE prop tarot cards, designed by Fergus Hall for the production. I have a deck from the original 1973 edition of the authorized memorabilia card set.

One of my kids got the TALES FROM THE CRYPT series on DVD from the library, which I've never seen, and these title credits from episode 1 are just a murderers' row of talent.

Let's bring back the trend of pop groups re-recording their hits in different languages (photo taken by me at a flea market in Spain).
