I’ve written to Keir Starmer, Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage urging them to condemn Donald Trump’s attack on the BBC.

The BBC belongs to Britain, not Trump. We must defend it together.

Transpose ‘GOP’ for Tory/Reform and ‘Dems’ for Labour and you have the situation in the UK!
American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

Now would be a good time for this episode in particular to be shown again (sadly it’s not on iPlayer)

"All of these things should make each and every one of us sit up and pay attention - because whatever we think of the BBC, the moment that the Trump machine celebrates your decapitation, you can be almost certain you’ve found yourself smack bang in the middle of someone' else story"
Truly excellent.
The BBC’s week from hell might look like accountability - but there is more than a whiff of orchestration about it all.

When the Telegraph cheers and Trump claps, you have to ask yourself:

Who, exactly, benefits when the Beeb bleeds?
The Beeb Bleeds, the Telegraph Cheers, and Trump Claps From the Balcony
The people who always hated public broadcasting finally smell blood - and the BBC seems too tired and compromised to fight back.

This as not simply populism, it's an extreme assault on public institutions and structures. The last week has been about the BBC, but comes alongside mounting attacks on judicial independence/the European Court of Human Rights. Treating each issue in isolation will see them killed off one by one.
What you’re witnessing is a populist assault on the BBC.

This is not an institutional scandal in any meaningful sense of the word. It is an attack on public service broadcasting.

This is a desperately sad story, one doubtless repeated across the country, but it’s also desperately stupid:

“an independent report … estimated the centre is saving the council more than £500,000 a year in costs that include services in mental health, youth justice and social care”
Last youth centre in one of England’s most deprived coastal areas faces closure
Pie Factory Music in Ramsgate, Kent, runs creative projects and provides a range of support services, but the building that houses the centre is due to be sold off in February

The #BBC must remain impartial. Too many right wing appointments in recent years. Time for a reboot and a return to political balance. There is no doubt that periodically the right and other groups attack the BBC, because they want it dismantled for their own ends.

I had my disagreements with the BBC under Tim Davie but he was a decent man doing a difficult job.

To see Trump's White House claiming credit for his downfall and attacking the BBC should worry us all.

I think it’s bizarre that they’ve gone over this - edited for brevity or not, Trump did encourage the riot 🤷‍♂️

And meanwhile GBN churn out blatant lies without recompense.

This lovely warm-ish sunny daytime weather over the weekend has been bloody fab for cracking through jobs outside - but boy do you notice the temp drop when you’re still outside working when the sun goes down 😬

People who say ‘run more trains’: there isn’t enough capacity for the *existing* timetable.
Solution is, need a new line. Nothing else solves it.
If you build one, it’s better to build it high speed - cost is higher, but CBR is also better.
You could call it… I dunno… HS2 maybe?

First experience of public ev charging.
What a fucking shambles.
Can’t plug in and just pay by card.
Tells you to download the app (unique app to them of course).
Set up all your details.
Type in the charger you’re at.
Plug it all in, press go.
“Unable to start charge”
No reason given.

Modern car interfaces that are all touch screen and touch sensitive controls rather than real buttons, are… infuriating.
How using a mobile phone while driving counts as a distraction but these things don’t, is beyond me.
