FAMU can't use the word Black on anything posted around campus related to Black History Month, to stay in compliance with Florida state laws against DEI. Black students can't use the word Black at their Historically Black College during Black History Month.

Thoughts this morning after reading Hauerwas’ critique of philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre.

Many « conservatives » are just liberals, since they both encourage individualism and « worship at the altar of the free market » (Bill Blaikie). Most choices at the polls are for different kinds of liberals.

Text of statement by Bishop Daniel Gutierrez of the diocese of Pennsylvania (the whole text is here): As you know, I am not one who issues statements based on every news item that crosses the wire. However, as a Bishop and more importantly a follower of Jesus Christ, I was repulsed and sickened by the meme that was on the President’s feed depicting two children of God who served this nation as apes. It is a sin against the Lord. This is not just politics or someone being themselves. It is an affront to Christ. Either you apologize, Mr. President, or you resign. If that doesn’t happen, Congress and Mr. Speaker, who claims to be Christian, need to do something. Death, the separation of families, and hate are not Christian. It is time for some courage on all issues. People are more important than your power or position. In the event you need some scripture to justify courage, here is a start: Genesis 1:27, Acts 10:34-35, Galatians 3:28, Deuteronomy 10:17-19, James 2:8, Revelation 7:9-10, 1 John 4:19-21, Ephesians 2:1

Last night, the president of the United States shared a video on his Truth Social account portraying the Obamas as apes. I want to be unmistakably clear about why this matters. This is not a joke. This is not "edgy humor." This is not politics as usual. Comparing Black people to apes is one of the oldest, most poisonous lies in the history of racism. It is the foundational myth that has been used to justify slavery, segregation, lynching, and ongoing dehumanization. It is the lie that says some people are closer to animals and others closer to God. And this came immediately after a National Prayer Breakfast where Paula White-Cain stood at a microphone and declared that this same man is the greatest champion of Christianity America has ever known. We must lament and sit with that dissonance.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Cheap solutions Re: Hydro eyes incentives to reduce power usage as shortage looms (Feb. 4) Hydro quietly released its 10-year plan. Perhaps the release was low-key because neither Hydro nor the Manitoba government are proud of the choices they are making. Hydro’s website leads with talk of net zero and shifting away from fossil fuels, accompanied by pictures of windmills and electric vehicles, but the bottom line is “Manitoba needs new, dependable energy sources as early as 2029 to meet increasing demand.” Hydro owns the monopoly for supplying electricity and “natural” gas in Manitoba, so no surprise that their solution is to continue burning gas for home heating and to spend $3 billion to build a turbine facility that burns gas to generate electricity. That sets Manitoba up to be burning hydrocarbons for years to come. Hydro is not in the business of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, so they don’t promise to capture the carbon from their smokestacks. Instead, they leave the problem of taking carbon out of the air to unnamed others. The province is responsible both for managing environmental policy and for guiding the investment plans of Manitoba Hydro. Hydro’s 10-year plan indicates that if government policy becomes more stringent on burning hydrocarbons, this will increase costs and risks for Hydro. The government is focused on “affordability,” requiring Hydro to keep its rates low and limiting the utility’s ability to use time-of-day pricing to deal with peak demand, which is its most pressing problem. As a result, Hydro is proposing a “cheap” solution with a few windmills and energy efficiency programs thrown in to make it look good. Help. Manitoba is headed down the wrong track, talking “net zero” but investing in gas-burning solutions for our energy needs. CHARLES FEAVER Winnipeg

I went by there today when I dropped off sandwiches for the @mainstreetproject.bsky.social. The surrounding buildings are lucky to have survived. The Main St Project had to be evacuated for clean up.
