Investing in cycling to address the housing crisis? That's exactly what the Dutch government is going to do!

€2.5 billion is being invested to make housing projects accessible. A large portion of this will go towards cycling infrastructure, such as continuous cycle routes. 👌

Is there a strong economic case for dropping the two-child benefits cap? This is what the evidence tells us. The limit was introduced to cut the welfare bill, but at what cost? Scrapping it could take 500k out of child poverty. theconversation.com/is-there-a-s...

I’m not a YIMBY only in the sense that I don’t have time to go to meetings but I do believe that I shouldn’t accrue wealth as a homeowner just because of luck and timing. I also think more people being able to afford to live where I do has lots of other benefits, some of them material, others not!
many YIMBYs i know are actually quite explicit about working against their own financial interest

Everyone's exhausted - it doesn't need to be this way.

Lower bills. Tax billionaires. We can make hope normal again.

Story in @glasgowbell.bsky.social this morning about the dire state of the Mitchell Library which needs £25m for stabilising works. If I was an immensely wealthy Scottish writer this is the sort of project I would fund with 2% of my fortune instead of obsessively trying to eradicate a minority group

From an article in today's Financial Times. Such an obvious statement of fact. It's hard to understand why direct public investment in social rent housing - so successful for decades - is now unthinkable.

England homelessness grown by a fifth since 2022, now 300,000.

Successive govts cut local authority funding in real terms, cut real wages/benefits, no curbs on profiteering, lack of social housing.

Cheaper to build social housing than using temporary accommodation.

Misery is a political choice.
Homelessness figures higher than data suggests, research shows
Official data for England underestimates the scale of the problem, according to research for charity Crisis says.

It's important to keep pointing this out about the many people who have gone the same way. Too often we suggest or imply that the trans moral panic merely allowed these people to be who they always were. Not true. We're seeing a process of *radicalisation*. We can't fix things unless we name them.
Transphobia is a pipeline to the far right. An example:

Suzanne Moore used to be a left wing columnist at the Guardian.

Then came the anti-trans panic. Despite the Guardian also promoting it, it wasn’t enough & she left.

Moore is now complaining about wokeness over the Irish famine & colonialism.
Suzanne Moore, who would rather be locked up than pay her BBC licence fee because the BBC is too nice to trans people for her liking.

75 years ago today, the European Convention of Human Rights, ECHR, was created. The UK played a key role in shaping it.
We should celebrate the ECHR & the vision of all who brought it to life.
We must resist regressive & cynical moves to rip us out of the convention!

Twitter is, at this point, openly a tool for Musk to further his toxic political ideology which includes the intent to whip up violence across the UK.

Targeting politicians is part of that strategy.

The best way to neuter it is Government action against Musk. The second best is a boycott.
I've just been called a "rape enabler" by the X AI tool Grok. This is a shocking allegation which has totally taken me aback & beyond anything I've ever encountered in normal political discourse. These AI tools are supposed to be there to serve us honestly with facts. Disturbing.
