These are deadly events fuelled by our government's unwillingness to be honest about the climate crisis

I'm sure those voices are just very busy expressing outrage over what's going on in other parts of the country... right? 🫠
I recall reading that when Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the New York City Mayor, there would be Shari'a Law, women forced to wear Burqas, Christian and Jewish places of worship bulldozed, and the sky would fall.

However these voices of doom seem to be very quiet these days? 🤷🏻‍♀️

When will the media reckon with their role in misinforming voters

(for example, how publishing a headline like this reinforces the misinformation cycle)

Disillusioned with the failure of the last two governments to address the cost of living crisis, voters turn to ...

*checks notes*

The only person holding power in both those governments

Pessimistic voters look to Winston Peters to be the change candidate inside the coalition
Analysis: For a man who claims little regard for the polls, the NZ First leader will surely be feeling more favourably toward their latest offerings.

"I always need to remind myself that these are not two separate emergencies competing for attention, but one story unfolding on different timelines."

Excellent read - lots of parallels here to Covid too
Wrote myself a pep talk to get back to work tomorrow. It helped me. Hope it helps you.
I don't know how to do this
But I'm going to keep doing it anyway.

A climate emergency fund would be useful right about now.

Oh, that's right, Luxon canned it so he could funnel more money to landlords.

This thread is a ray of sunlight
I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.
January 22, 2026 at 2:27 PM
That the government are such predictable liars that the Greens were able to fully debunk Luxons speech before it was given feels like it should be a bigger news story

Yep
You know what the weirdest thing is?

They think they are leaving us behind…

Maybe it feels like they are leaving us behind too…

But actually we are desperately throwing out life savers and trying to pull them onto the life boat, but they are pulling us into the water instead.

Them: The imaginary hand of the market will maximise value for everyone

The market: We invented a new kind of pan - it's covered in cancer and ruined if you touch it with metal.

Corporations will act like they are reluctantly complying with fascism, but they birthed it.

There is a straight line from the greed of corporations to what we have seen this week

I cannot emphasize enough just how dumb the exploit of MMH is.

It's so dumb that it's highly probable there have been other breaches that simply haven't resulted in a randsom and so went undetected
I think it's important for the non-technical people to understand: this is dumb. This is not an elaborate hack. This is an exploitation of a very big mistake.

I think every news article on heatwaves and record breaking temperatures should end with a list of recent policy decisions (and a list of who voted) so that people can be reminded about who is responsible. Oh and a list of government lobbyists too.

you simply do not have to preface your statements about this with “but Maduro sucks”

whether or not Maduro sucks is entirely beside the point - we invaded another country and grabbed their leader with no justification other than “we wanted to”

don’t give them cover on it

The real reason the tech bros want to talk about AI personhood is so they don't have to take responsibility for making shitty software
1. Headlines everywhere today read "Grok apologizes."

This is bullshit. A chatbot is not something that can apologize.

Pretending otherwise is simple laundering these companies' bullshit about what AI is, while diffusing blame away from the human beings that developed and released this system.

Imagine being such a broken human you outsourced your apologies to a bot

Only thing worse would be being a journalist who reports it uncritically
