Watching Pink Floyd - The Wall for the first time in many years. I remember the animated sequences but the live-action production design, lighting, and cinematography is just extraordinary — it really puts to shame almost all contemporary movies in that regard.

No lies detected, lmao.

(fwiw, push comes to shove I’m a USC fan, loved them back in the Pete Carroll era, and it’d be neat if they ever got great again but Lordy, the program has done such stupid miserable terrible things in the last 20 years, they deserve every bit of laughter & ridicule.)
Hey, remember when USC blew up the Pac-12 to escape Oregon and Washington and Kyle Whittingham and Pac-12 After Dark, only to end up with Oregon and Washington and Kyle Whittingham and Pac-12 After Dark.

This is a helpful and dare I say aspirational mini-thread.
FWIW, I've never had a year typify "You do not rise to the level of your goals, you fail to the level of your systems" more than 2025. Emotionally and energy wise --fires and fascism factored in -- I've never been more punched out. But I worked and lined up more work based on old habits saving me.

Current weather forecast for the Rose Bowl tomorrow is heavy rain near kickoff (9 am), tapering off but light rain through the rest of the game. Should be kinda wild.

2025 started badly (out of work, fires, neo-fascism), got worse (more fascism), and ends precariously (odd jobs, fascism, leaky roof). But there was some joy and relief in there too (4 months of work w/ wonderful people, my son starting high school and killing it).

2026, please be better.

Ah hahahahaha, second stage of enshittification already! (Without even reaching culmination of stage one to begin with.)
“This could look like a user asking how much ibuprofen to take for a headache receiving a promoted ad for Advil in the chatbot’s response. Meanwhile, actual results on correct dosage may be brushed to the side, or buried under a mountain of ad text…”

I enjoyed this Year in Review quite a bit, well worth reading. A few films mentioned here are already on my "need to see" list, some of them I've seen and consider highly worthy, and (of course) there are one or two where I disagree. But lists would be boring if we all agreed.
As I will not being see any new releases the next few days, I have written about the year of 2025 in film on my website including my top 20 films of the year, two older films I discovered for the first time and a few thoughts about the world and the business.

Remember:

When Tylenol was poisoned *by an outsider* and killed people, the company recalled all their products & redesigned them.

When Intel’s Pentium had a bug so obscure it affected 1 in _9 billion_ long division calculations, they recalled their chips.

ChatGPT was made deadly *by its team*.
i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides
Adam Raine’s life hurtled toward tragedy soon after he began talking with ChatGPT about homework. Analysis of his ChatGPT account shows how the chatbot became a confidant as he planned to end his life.
