File under “problems that did not need to be solved.”. The new branding is fine on its own. But we’ve been building a brand now for four years and it’s a good one. With hashtags and everything. And now we start over. With three premier leagues all at different levels in BC.
The Canadian Premier League reveals a new logo in a rebranded look from its debut crest from 2019-2025.

The new shield aligns with the Canadian Soccer Business colours as well.

In the 2023 season (at 18 yrs young), with limited minutes, scored some huge goals. A brace on Father's Day maybe? Huge goal in Nanaimo. When he was 10 yrs old, I played him at every position on the field. Versatile and competitive AF.

This guy is a @tssrovers.bsky.social Rover legend. Six goals in 42 matches between 2023-25. A huge presence whether on the backline at full back or up front where he scores for fun. And a sweet guy to boot. Quietly does the business and now he’s a pro.

Crazy to think Vancouver FC's season gets underway two weeks tomorrow!

Still a few additions to be announced for their season roster but congratulations to @tssrovers.bsky.social and SFU standout Kian Procter. The LB/LW has deservedly signed his first pro deal with the Eagles.

Great addition.

Cool to see our 2018 Rover Emma Regan moving to NWSL She’s a good example of why League 1 matters. She played for us in the WPSL after her Whitecaps career was done and then in League 1 BC after uni for Varsity before hesding to Køge and then AFC Toronto.

She’s becoming a very good player.

It's raining. Like REALLY raining and I'm watching sports this weekend: AFCON, Tottenham, Grimsby Town, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Bayern Munich.
Sports this weekend
One of the cool things about living on the west coast is that most of the global football that I enjoy watching happens early in the morning, especially on weekends. I can squeeze in a match or two before getting on with my day. Likewise, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the only NHL hockey team I follow, usually play in the afternoon, while I am wrapping up work and preparing dinner.

A course outline for participatory leadership
Just back from teaching participatory leadership to 35 university leaders in Dallas, Texas and arrive home to find this great course outline that Cedric Jamet has put together for his university students. This stuff is insanely useful. A set pot permanent skills that are needed for applications throughout a person's life. ESPECIALLY in the university, where academic leaders are rarely offered any leadership training at all.

Arising out of apathy
My neighbour Don Shafer’s substack is a really good extended exploration of dialogue and democratic participation and today he names an important aspect of the apathy and overwhelm that citizens are feeling. What many of us experience as chaos is better understood as administration. Robert Arnold writes that power hasn’t advanced only through spectacle, but through paperwork, procedure, and pace.

Belated Christmas present but the brother in law comes up big with a vintage Leaf jersey of my favourite player of all time.

Phil Rosenthal, being interviewed by Tom Power. Phil Rosenthal, interviewed last year by Tom Power on Q at CBC talking about what it was like when he stepped into running Everybody Loves Raymond. It's great interview, but I love the section that begins at 21 minutes. It was his first job as a show runner, and he learned from other bosses he had worked for.

Some more thoughts on religion

The other day I wrote a post looking at religion as an emergent container of meaning making that is both difficult to define and important in civic life. I'm writing this as a person who is religious to the extent that I practice within and belong to a 100 year old mainline Christian tradition with a mixed history in civic affairs, the…

The other thing I love about AFCON coverage is how perfectly the commentators on BeIN seem to balance urgency and emotion with reflection and strategic insights. While indmlove watching football mostly without the commentary on, these folks give each match an aura of importance and excitement.

In the AFCON group stages, head to head record is the first tiebreaker. I like that better than goal difference, which is the second tiebreaker if the head to head record is tied. Thoughts?
