I am in Florence at the moment, for a research stay as a fellow at the #EUI.
Have been absent from #socialmedia for some time, because I needed some time off, but decided it's time to confront myself with this part of the world again. So here we go.
Greetings from beautiful Florence in any case!

What happens when nationalist history meets the horrors of empire? For @jacobinmag.bsky.social, I reviewed a new exhibition on British counterinsurgency at the Imperial War Museum jacobin.com/2025/11/brit...
Reckoning With Empire at Britain’s Imperial War Museum
An exhibition at London’s Imperial War Museum offers a welcome corrective to the nostalgia for empire common among Britain’s elites.

The field wouldn‘t be what it is today if marginalised people hadn’t fought for their history, and in fighting developed new methods, knowledge, perspectives. There is a reason one of our best journals is called @historyworkshop.org.uk (in German @werkstattgeschichte.openbiblio.social.ap.brid.gy)

Something I currently get really excited about in my research: #legalactivism and how historical actors started using trials and the law in their struggles to contest #gender and #racial #discrimination. Like the "Heinze"-women here in their struggles for equal pay.

These current plans by Brit.conservatives to make long-term residents deportable are particularly worrying because they are part of such a broad trend of attacking and disenfranchising migrants/migrantized groups.
Ostensibly the party of law and order with a plan to deport migrants even if they’ve done nothing more than live here legally and claim support to which they’ve contributed and are entitled. Years of targeting migrants disguised as concern about legality paving the way to this and open violence.
Here Lam explicitly sets out her proposal - which is official Conservative Party policy - to deport long-standing legal permanent residents who have *ever* claimed any benefit, including the state pension or child benefit (even if the child is British), or who earn less than £39K.
