I just received a very interesting email from a reader who worked in nuclear power plant inspection and security for many years during the 1990s and 2000s. His basic point is that Microsoft's plan to revive the shuttered Three Mile Island nuclear plant is ludicrous on its face.

His basic point is that getting everything back up into safe running shape is going to be a *huge* money suck. He's convinced Constellation and/or Microsoft are involved in some kind of Madoff-esque scam -- that they know this thing can't really happen.

Also, if there's anyone whose beliefs about how to best construct an energy system you can safely ignore, it's anyone leading the AI charge. They really, truly, do not care about where they get the energy they want, and they will get it any way they can--including on the backs of captive ratepayers.
The AI industry's chief spokesperson says the quiet part out loud: the massive data center buildout "will" be powered by fossil gas and "maybe" a bit of solar and later we "hope" that nukes will deliver carbon-free energy.
Altman says more and cheaper energy has powered leaps in standard of living throughout history. Says in the short term to power the AI boom we need more natural gas and maybe some solar; in the "medium term" he says he hopes it's "advanced nuclear -- fission and fusion."
