That's me in the coral
That's me on the sandbank, being a crustacean
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no, I've pinched too much
I haven't pinched enough
CRABGEDY!

WHEN THE FEELING'S GONE
YOU'RE A CRUSTACEAN

IT'S CRABGEDY!

WHEN THE MORNING CRIES
YOU'VE GOT STALKY EYES

YOU'VE GOT A SHELL
WITH NO ONE TO LOVE YOU
YOU'RE GOING THROUGH HELL!

BUGS. ARE. SHRIMPS.

It me, about papers with @jimmybernot.bsky.social and @ostratodd.bsky.social 🧪🦑
Shrimps is bugs? No, it’s kinda the other way around. Insects are technically crustaceans, which highlights the importance of systematics in understanding how evolution unfolds. My latest for @smithsonianmag.bsky.social.

Repping the Oakley Lab to #StandUpForScience in Santa Barbara!!
March 7, 2025 at 9:25 PM
Today we #standupforscience🔬
I almost didn't go to this because I felt so overwhelmed by all of the causes we need to fight for now.
If you're feeling this way too, know that anything you do to fight is a win.

You cannot do all the good the world needs, but the world needs all the good you can do.

- 10,000 research grants flagged for review by NSF Program Directors

- Reviews due by 5 p.m. today

- They flag grants with "broadening participation" language, foreign aid, climate science, domestic energy, and "discriminatory programs including illegal DEI"
NEW: We obtained the directions NSF program officers are following to review all grants for compliance with the Trump EOs and the turmoil it has created in an agency mandated to broaden STEM participation. Our story: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Exclusive: how NSF is scouring research grants for violations of Trump’s orders
The US National Science Foundation has unfrozen grant funding, but it continues to scrutinize research projects, sowing turmoil.

It only took 20+ years, but the "Mystery Mollusc" paper came out this week. It is a swimming nudibranch that gallops in slow motion through the deep water-column. To top it off, it is bioluminescent, and we were able to film its glow with our special low-light camera.🦑🧪

Hello!👋
I want to know how bioluminescent animals know when to glow. 💡 Right now I study the evolution of biological rhythms in bioluminescent Caribbean ostracods. Previously, I've studied the evolution of femme fatale fireflies.
Only time can tell what I'll do next! ⏰
