New article from me for @middleeastmonitor.bsky.social on how museums (like the British Museum), universities and other institutions are complicit in the Zionist genocidal project of rewriting history and erasing ancient Palestine.

Fortunate to attend #ASCS47 at the last-minute in Auckland this week. A great chance to see old friends and meet new ones! Always wonderful to see the supportiveness of our community on full display.

If anyone wants to put together a panel on Roman Social History for ASCS in Feb 2027, let’s chat!

Sarah Pomeroy built her career writing about ancient women who lived in the E Med, W Asia + Egypt. Her investment in Whiteness and Orientalism, which mimicks Trumpian fascist talking points, epitomizes everything that is rotten in Classics. Same for the other Zios tantruming on the list.
It is truly upsetting that a senior scholar in classics, with the protections and stature of tenure, would openly gloat about the US denying visas to people (often nontenured) due to their political views. Maybe the worst thing I've ever seen on the Classics listserv, and that's saying something.

Okay, why does this book matter? We held a conference in Melbourne in 2023, believing democratic-decay scholarship needs to pay attention to Rome, the only old democracy to fall from internal causes. I don’t need to say why that matters now. We want to bring #ancientbluesky and #polisci together. 🧵
Our book has now appeared, a bit ahead of schedule. Its in Open Access, meaning the chapters are all free to download either as epub or pdf from this link. I’ll put a thread together on what the individual chapters are about.

🎉 NEW ARTICLE! 🎉

http://www.workingcl...

Dr. Christina Hotalen (drchristinah.bsky.social) was not best pleased with Gladiator II. In this article she takes a look at the flaws, foibles, and faux pas in the film, examining its potential as an ideologically-driven story that panders to the right.
This Roman historian was not entertained by Gladiator II — Working Classicists
From the minute we heard about this movie, I said to my friends there was no WAY I would write a think piece about Gladiator II, let alone watch it, and yet, here we are: I've both watched and think-pieced.
